connect to StorEdge A1000
hi,
i am new in this
i want to connect Enterprise 220R with storEdge A1000, i have a SCSI cable but i do not know how to get into the StorEdge, i have Oracle10 on the 220R and i want to cluster with the StorEdge
do i have to install software on the StorEdge? or on the 220R?
so any clue? any help?
thanks.

This topic has been discussed many times in these Sun forums,
but since the April '06 merging, the info is a bit difficult to find.
So, let's see if I can be of some small help, here.
1. The A1000 has an integrated RAID controller in its chassis.
The controller requires a High Voltage Differential (HVD) connection.
Whereas HVD is not very common in the PC universe, it has been the
default differential type for many, many years with such companies as Sun, SGI and others.
... for a general discussion on "What Is SCSI", see this link at the ARS Technica website:
http://arstechnica.com/paedia/s/scsi-1.html
2. The SCSI interface that may be integrated on a Sun computer's systemboard
is NOT a HVD circuit, but is a Single-Ended SCSI interface.
That's not the same type of SCSI.
Thus, you will not get the A1000 to function if you had hoped to avoid
the purchase of an additional adapter host bus adapter (HBA) card.
3. There is only one HVD card in Sun's product line that is HVD and
is also a PCI form-factor.It's the X6541A (part number 375-0006).
See the [b ]components list of SCSI devices for the E220R, in the Sun System Handbook.
4. Next, I believe you will also need to install the RAID Manager software package.
RM6 is used to administer your drives through that controller in the array.
I'll let others jump in here for the software stuff.
I'm a hardware person.

thanks for your reply
my problem is that i dont know how to get into the StorEdge from the 220R, i mean do i have to install the RAID manager on the 220R and then connect though it to the StorEdge and make RAID 5 for instance!!!!!!!
i am working in a LAB and i am new in this :)
Cheers.

Yes. You need to install Raid Manager.
# 4
i did install the Raid Manager 6.2 but when i rebooted the system it gave me this error:
OK boot -r
...
"no RAID device was found in the arraymon"
and when i opened the Raid Manager i got this error
"Could not find any RAID Modules"
any suggestions?
Thanks.

By the way the "controler fault" led at the back of the StorEdge is ON so is it from -the SCSI cable?-from the StorEgde it self-from the configuration of the 22R?Thanks.

You didn't have the opportunity to get back to us with hardware information.
The SCSI cable comes from the array and connects to the E220R.
Where are you connecting it on the E220R ?
You MUST use the HVD model SCSI card I noted in my first response.
No other SCSI cards will function properly.
The A1 000 compatible SCSI card list in the SSH
shows only one SBUS card, one PCI card, and one cPCI card.
Are you using Solaris 9 or older?
Functional support for Raid Manager and the A1000 were removed from Solaris 10.
# 7
sorry for that but i am new in this and i dont know what type of SCSI in the 220Ranway i am using the SCSI card that built in the 220Rand i am using the Solaris 10need more information? Thanks.

Glance back at my very first response to your original posting.
The built-in SCSI port is the wrong sort of SCSI for the A1000.
It is S/E SCSI and you need HVD SCSI.
It won't work.
Solaris 10 doesn't have the driver packages for the array, any longer.
It won't work.
Use Solaris 9 or 8, and and then install the correct additional SCSI card,
and Raid Manager will function.
A1000 on Solaris 10 has been discussed a few times in this forum,
in recent weeks. You should be able to find those discussion threads
in the first 5 or 6 pages of postings to this Storage Forum.

i installed the Solaris 8 and i installed the Raid Manager 6.but when i start the RM6 it gave me this error:"Could not find any RAID modules"do i have to do something before ?any suggestions? Thanks.Message was edited by: astroveny.sun

so is E220R and E420R use the same kind ofsingle ended SCSI card on the board ?
# 11
Yes, Jason,
The integrated SCSI is Single-Ended.
The chipset runs the internal devices ( disk, tape and/or CDROM),
and provides a wide channel for whatever S/E device might connect to the rear of the chassis.
Glance at the icon that's stamped into the metal at that external HD68 connector.
The following two links are to a 3rd party web site:

The same 53C876 dual-channel S/E chipset is on each.
A1000 and D1000 external storage arrays will require
the purchase and installation of a High-Voltage-Differential card.
Sun has offered one such card, sales option number X6541A (part # 375-0006).
The 375-0006 card is clearly described in the array documentation.

Thanks Rukbat. so can I connect SUN E220R/E420R or ultra 60 to A5200 array ( for clusting purpose) . what kind of HBA would I need, would Qlogic QLA2200F/33 works? Thanks in advance.

Go to the Sun System Handbook.
bring up the resource page for your array and select the "Related Documentation" link.
Use the Installation manual for that information.
You can also use the Complete Components List for the array
as well as the Complete Components List for the computer.
Compare each for matching FCAL cards.
