security erasure of sun hard disk drives

hi there,

first of all i am an absolute beginner when it comes to sun systems so i do apologise if this is the wrong type of forum for me, my problem is i have several sun ULTRASPARC 60 CREATOR 3D tower systems and i need to erased the hard drives securely before getting rid of them normally i take the drives out and do it using a dos disk i have but i was wondering if there was an easier way i could do it without having to open them up and remove the drives from them(i get quite a few of these systems) so i want to try and speed up the process a bit, any help along the lines of getting them to boot from a CD or FLOPPY disc (if its possible)would be very much appreciated and once again i do apologise if this is the wrong place,

thanks in advance

Boot from your Solaris CD media, and use

Format -->> Analyze -->> Write

That is a disk test that is destructive to any data.

It should be sufficient for your needs.

It is described in the man pages for the format command.

If you have misplaced the Solaris CD's, then any release

of Solaris 8 or Solaris 9 will suffice for the U-60.

Download disk #1 of 2 (not the Installation disk #0 )

and create your own disk from image.

As an ex Sun engineer, let me emphasise there is no possible way of completely securing/erase a disk. If that was the case, customers would not be forced to pay a premium to not give back dead disks to Sun. All you need to do is figure out block sizes on the disks and with some magic, you can recover almost anything that was on there.. I know.. I have done it. Just ask Seagate or Hitachi what they can do with dead disks, let alone good ones?

If the data is not too sensitive, do a dd to it a couple of times.
