need help creating table of contents
I am sufficiently incapable of understanding what I've read in the help file and online that I would like to ask if I can receive a recommendation in these forums as to where to go. I am willing to pay the $30 per incident fee to Sun, but I just am very frustrated trying to understand anything about building a Table Of Contents.
I can't believe how frustrating and not-at-all-intuitive this comparatively advanced feature is turning out to be, as I try to use it for the first time, after all these years.
Ultimately I need to have my table of contents linked, so that I can cick on the appropriate heading at the top of the document and be taken to the corresponding point in the middle of the document. Yet, I can't even get to the point where my document is in some sort of reasonable outline form, with a corresponding non-linked table of contents.
In the end, I will export to PDF format.
So, I have a general idea of what I want to accomplish here, but am finding the entire area to be unusually difficult.

I am quickly adding, from my old account, that I had trouble logging in and created a new account, but this older id will trace back that I've been a registered staroffice user for quite some time (since at least 5.2, and I think 5.1).

By default the TOC is produced from those paragraphs that use the Heading 1-10 paragraph styles so think of this as a way to create your "outline". Use Heading1 for chapter titles and Heading2 for subtitle 1, etc.
You want to use hyperlinks to jump from a TOC entry to the chapters or other headings. In the TOC dialog click the Entries tab, all or part of the TOC entry can serve as the hyperlink. Click into an empty box to the left of an entry code and click the Hyperlink button. LS (link start) will be inserted. Click in an empty box to the right of another entry code (to the right of the one previously used) and click the Hyperlink button again. LE (link end) will be inserted.
Assuming you want hyperlinks for all Heading 1-10 levels click the All button.
Other things can be done with to TOC but these are the basics.

John:
Thanks for the response. I have unfortunately been too busy to follow up on this expeditiously, but your response does jibe with something I saw in the help file that I had missed, regarding the heading format. I have it bookmarked as the next step to take, so thanks again, and I will try to post how it goes.
