Global Device Group

Hello,I want to know why Global Device Groups are used in a suncluster ( seen in scstat -D & scconf -p )? What's there specific purpose? Is a Global device Group compulsory in a sun cluster ?Rgds,Navada.

Global devices are a fundamental part of Sun Cluster. They provide a homogeneous device namespace across the entire cluster regardless of the device naming on each node locally. This eases software installation and configuration. So, for example, Oracle RAC needs to have the same name given to its OCR and voting disk devices on all nodes. If you don't have global devices, you may be forced to create symbolic links instead.
