hi ppl,

im pretty new to all this so if the question doesnt make any sense, ah well ... i did not read through any of the docs on the web yet ... im kinda in the process ...

ok this is the deal ... ive got a server sunfire v210 with ALOM ... lets say ip address of the server is 10.239.18.79 ...

now i want to be able to remotely connect to the server and so i want to create a ALOM IP Address different to the server ip address ... how to i do that ... does the ALOM software let me conjfigure this ? or ?

cheers

Yes, you can. If you have root access to this machine you can use scadm utility to set IP address, netmask and gateway for ALOM network interface. scadm is located in /usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-V210/sbin/ Then you can use any telnet client to connect to specified IP address at port 23.

Also you can configure ALOM setting while you are logged on via ALOM network interface. Easiest way is to use setupsc command. If network settings were changed you have to reset SC with resetsc command.

Have you reset the SC? You can achieve this with scadm utility or by completely turning off the machine (by unplugging it rom outlet).

Please verify the following:

1. Network cable is properly attached to NET MGT port on back panel of server (leftmost RJ-45 socket) and physical link is established. The green LED on NET MGT port should be turned on or blinking.

2. NET MGT port is connected to proper ethernet switch, i.e. you should check whether you can reach this port physically from machine you are connecting from (from your workstation).

3. Network settings are correct, i.e. IP packets are routed properly from your workstation. If you not sure please provide output from the command

/usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/scadm show | grep netsc

and network settings of your workstation. Here is sample output from my V240:

# /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/scadm show | grep netsc

netsc_tpelinktest="true"

netsc_dhcp="false"

netsc_ipaddr="172.17.250.65"

netsc_ipnetmask="255.255.0.0"

netsc_ipgateway="172.17.255.254"

and my Windows workstation:

C:\>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local area connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : censored.ru

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.2.165

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.255.254

5. DHCP is not used for SC configuration (netsc_dhcp="false", see before)

6. There are no firewall between your workstation and V210 or firewall, if it exists, allows IP packets to pass from any port of your worksation's network interface to SC IP address port 23 and in reverse direction.

I don't think it's possible for the ALOM to send a "connection refused" IF you assigned the IP address correctly and are connecting to the right IP address. Did you assign the ALOM a DIFFERENT IP address from the system? You also may have a dupe IP address.

Rememeber, when you get a connection refused it means you have successfully sent packets to the IP address and gotten a Reset back from your connection attempt.

Ooops - OR you may have a firewall blocking telnet access in such a way that you receive a "connection refused", although most attempts to connect to a blocked firewall port will hang.

and i forgot to include ...i am within the firewall so that cannot deny me access ...i have also checked some files under the /etc directory to make sure that telnet is enabled and it all seems fine ...

I'm pretty sure that the port that you are plugged into needs to be running at 10Mbit. You might want to check that.

Hi All

I too face the same problem.

Problem :- Not at all asking for login name for the telnet session.

My system is able to open the ALOM session with the SERIAL Managemnent Port & Not able to open a telnet thru NETWORK Managemnet Port.

I did the all the settings requierd for Network Interface variables,

if_network, netsc_ipaddr, netsc_ipgateway, netsc_ipnetmask.

even the Green Led of NETWORK Management Port is also glowing.

& I had removed & connected back the power cable from the system also.

i had also reseted the sc using the resetsc command.

Can anyone help me...

Bye

I'm having a bit of a nightmare with a couple of these too.

I've read the documentation and have a port configured at 10Mbit (I've tried both half and full duplex) and tested that the network connection was right using the bge1 interface on the V210 and that was fine.

I've setup the box using the scadm utility and it has the correct details when I do a scadm show.

The network connection is on the same subnet and the gateway and netmask is the same for both machines but I can't ping it from the machines bge0 interface. I've tried cold booting the machine as well as resetting the rsc and not had any joy.

Any advice would be useful...

Snoddy.

Hi All,

At last i managed to solve the issue of managing the ALOM into Network.

The problem what i had was that , the variable netsc_tpelinktest (BY default is TRUE ) was assigned to FALSE.

Becoz the Link Intergrity test is being enabled in other end( in HUB side ) , so the communication was not at all there.

After Making teh variable value to TRUE & resetsc the ALOM ,made My ALOM to be accessed remotely.

Thanks to all,

K.S.Madhavan.
