Sun Fire 280R - Fast Data Access MMU Miss error message

We recently removed the RSC card from one of our Sun Fire 280R servers (to replace a faulty one on a more important server.)

Since then it won't boot automatcially, instead it drops to the boot prompt.

When we type boot it fails with the error Fast Data Access MMU Miss.

Trying a test-all it hangs.

probe-scsi and probe-scsi-all work fine.

Is there any way to disable the RSC card?

What could be casunig these errors?

We don't require the RSC card as we intend to install Linux (RedHat) on this server.

Many thanks

The systemboard in the 280R is also used in other systems.

The SB1000, the SB2000 and the Netra 20 systems come to mind.

When the RSC card is in place, the system knows it's a 280R.

The moment you removed it, it thinks it is a Sunblade desktop workstation.

The OBP Device paths to the two internal disks are now reversed.

Other data path signalling has now been re-routed and changed.

Break out the corporate checkbook and order a new RSC for your server.

... and I also do not know of any alternative OS's that were ever ported

for UltraSPARC III or UltraSPARC III+ cpu modules.

Solaris would run best on it, anyhow.

Most any other would be a lash-up kludge.

Yeah seems like solaris is our only choice :/ no up to date redhat distributions for SPARC processors.

Managed to fix the problem, or rather it fixed itself. Took the case off to have another look inside, didn't see anything obviously up with it, closed it, booted it and it worked.

We're gonna order another RSC card anyway, anyone know where I can get one cheaply in the UK?

Have been quoted ?70 + VAT so they're cheap enough anyway.

John, the 280R supports X2136A and earlier version, these cards can run Red Hat Linux. Solaris 10 supports many GNU applications and can be configured with many commercial applications supported with Red Hat Linux. Linux on SPARC is limited and cumbersome compared to Solaris! On our old Hardware support forum companies could not solicit business by posting offers, perhaps this should be discouraged here too. The US market can be very good for used hardware, there are always good deals to be had, however be careful with warranty promises!
