JES 2005Q4 DS 5.2 and Samba (Oh No!)

Hello,

Just wondering if some enlightened individual can address my issues or point me to relevant docs in the bowels of sun.com...

I have recently installed JES 2005Q4 DS v5.2 on SPARC/Solaris 10 and by some miracle managed to navigate the treacherous waters of Access Manager 7 configuration. Now, I am able to use <website>/amserver to bind to the ldap database as amldapuser and my users (still in test) can log in to the Access Manager and change their passwords/phone numbers, etc.

Perhaps I have a genetic defect or something, but I want to now install Samba on this same server. I've done some Samba tests using simple password authentication and I'm able to see shares on the main (ldap) server, printers, etc. HOWEVER, in their infinite wisdom, Sun saw fit to ship Solaris 10 with a Samba version NOT configured with ldap support....hmmm (what was the thinking behind THAT one).

So, I've been reading online and have found the following assertions:

- Samba authentication via DS 5.2 _IS_ possible

- Samba on Solaris 10 _MUST_ use the OpenLDAP libraries when building for LDAP support

Are these two assertions true?

I have seen the idealx.org site and it doesn't really address the use of LDAP servers other than OpenLDAP.

- If I compile and install the OpenLDAP libraries, will I kill my DS 5.2 install?

I see the below on my Solaris 10 server:

# cd /usr/lib

# ls nss*

nss_compat.so.1nss_files.so.1nss_nis.so.1nss_user.so.1

nss_dns.so.1nss_ldap.so.1nss_nisplus.so.1

- Does DS 5.2 rely on nss_ldap.so.1 ? (my guess is yes)

- Is there an accepted voodoo dance for placing OpenLDAP library files on my server without "really" installing them so that the Samba build can reference them during compilation and then use the methods to connect to DS 5.2 ?

Thanks,

Phil
