scsi drives in D1000 not accessible after SOLARIS 10 installation

Here is the scenario:

Solaris 10 was successfully installed in an ultra2 box with 9.1Gb harddrive on it. Connected to it is an StorEDGE D1000 SCSI box with 2 x 8.43Gb drives.

At "setenv" level (OK> prompt), I can probe those 3 SCSI drives; meaning that ultra2 box can probe remote drives (8.43gb). Since I wanted to use those 2 remote drives I went to format command then partitioned, labeled and volname it, but after I had done those procedures still I CAN'T view them in the local machine. I even went to the GUI interface but those 2 drives where no where to find. My colleague advise me to work with Sun Volume Manager but "vxdctl" seems not to be loaded at the box. I don't know how to append such package in solaris10.

Questions are:

1. Solaris 10 goes automatically to GUI mode, which file should i edit for the machine to boot at CLI - command line interface only?

2. How can I make those 2 drives accessible from local machine?

3. How would I confirm that Sun Volume Manager is working at the background (daemon)?

(ps command does not display vold service).

May be somehow you got an expertise on this one, could you share it.

Hardware:

=========

Sun Ultra Enterprise 2

2 x 300Mhz CPU

256Mb RAM

9.1 Gb SCSI

connected to:

Storedge D1000

slot0: 8.43Gb

slot1: 8.43Gb

> properly terminated

If you see them in 'format', then obviously you are viewing them in the local machine.

Are you saying there are no device entries for the disks? Can you show the disks in the 'format' output and the contents of 'ls /dev/rdsk/*s2' ?

You can select 'command line login' from the login screen.

Depending on the version installed you can run '/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d'

Need more information. If you're looking at them in format, they they appear to be accessible already.

'vold' is not associated with hard drives. It's the daemon that mounts removable media like CDs.

Thanks Darren for your reply.

> Correct, I can view them in format level, but not able to view the physical drive and write on it when I type "df" command. It only displays 9.1Gb which is the local drive. How can I make a test file copy and delete on it. Am also would like to apply raid on it but drives aren't accessible at RAID software level.

No, I wouldn't expect you would be able to without some other steps.

"Not able to view them in the OS" doesn't mean anything to me. You'll need to describe the commands you're using more completely.

Are you looking in /dev/rdsk for the disk?

Have you used newfs?

Are you running commands that give you errors?

*What* displays 9.1GB? Please show the command you are using and the output. Much is lost when you try to summarize as much as you do.

I remember encountering a problem during the installation. I would like to show it with you. There were disks with [x] mark on it , and when i try to install solaris on that drive which has [x] mark, it prompts me an error, displaying somehow related to inaccessible disk (I forgot the exact message). Would you give your email add then I will send those images over to you so that you can have a thorough look of it.

Disks with that mark were Fujitsu SCSI disk 8.4GB. I will let you know asap and will have the image sent to you once i got your email.

Hi there Darren;

I changed the scsi drives to seagate 3 X 36Gb ST336605LC and all those 3 drives located in storedge D1000 are now visible through df command.

I am sure those 2 Gb drives were working properly because i had you those from other machine. I may conclude that MAG3091LC are not compatible with sun storedge D1000. Kindly correct me, if I got this wrong.

SOLARIS10 IS UP AND RUNNING NOW. Thanks Darren for the support.
