installing 119578-24 hangs shutdown (again)

Patch 119589-24 showed up in update manager (smpatch) recently.

But if you try to install it using smpatch update followed by a restart (shutdown -i6) the machine hangs in the shutdown.

The workaround is to either install it manually "smpatch add -i 119578-24"

or do a "svcadm disable -t fmd" before the restart.

This patch has had this problem before. You'd think they would have learnt from the experience...

Your symptoms match mine. I glad you reported it. I patch weekly and I load the patches without reading them. The "fmd" not shutting down behavior is not new.

Just to be sure, I tried the single patch 119578-24 on another host. The symptoms are the same. The solution is to patch it manually and to reboot the residue traces under "/var/sadm/spool".

I typically patch two toy hosts first. If any patch has problems, I will not apply them on more critical production hosts.

I, too, saw this. I ran manual 'patchadd' after un-jarring the archive. It told me the pre- and post-patch scripts had incorrect permissions (no execute) and to fix them. After I did so, the patchadd completed.

This appears to be fixed. They must have tweaked the patch metadata...
