I am installing on an x86 version of Solaris 10

It looks as though there mat be corruption in the package database. Can you install any patches at all? (ie. is it just the Update Connection installer/patches that fail or is it a general issue with the OS?)

I was able to install the Recommended Patches for Solaris 10 x86. What else can I test?

You do have a corrupt package database, probably just a file where there should be a directory though. I would recommend opening a ticket with Sun to fix it, but reinstalling the OS would also solve it.
