Patch 120536-08 fails to install

Hello,

I've got Solaris 10 on x86_64.with zones and problem with 120536-08 patch which `smpatch analyze` claims need to be installed.

This patch tries to update following packages which are not (any of them) on my system:

Package SUNWxf86 from directory SUNWxf86 in patch 120536-08 is not installed on the system.

Package SUNWxwpls from directory SUNWxwpls in patch 120536-08 is not installed on the system.

Package SUNWxwscf from directory SUNWxwscf in patch 120536-08 is not installed on the system.

Package SUNWxwssu from directory SUNWxwssu in patch 120536-08 is not installed on the system.

Patching ends with:

WARNING: patchadd returned <8> for global zone

From README.120536-08 I took a complete list of files which this patch provides. Here is the output from looking for these files (OK means there is such a file on my system, FAILED - there is no such file):

Now I've got a question: How to tell smpatch command that I don't need patch 120536-08?

Hello,

The smapatch command works of the dependancies of the individual patches there is no way of "switching of" or instructing smpatch to ignore these dependancies.

There error message which you are seeing may be a result of another patch having a dependancy on patch - 120536-08.

However the metadata patch information associated with this patch may be incorrect. I will pass this issue to our patch support team to verify this.

Hello,Can you raise a support case for this issue so we can investigate it further? We need to gather some output from your host to verify a few things but unfortunately we cannot have this data posted on the public forum. Thanks

I would raise a support case, but can't find a place where I can do that. Can you help me by giving a link? Can I raise a support case without a service plan bought?

Why did you try to install the patch you did not want it? A possible solution is use -x idlist=<file> option and exclude this patch.

Without service plan I can only install security patches. So, when smpatch analyze show there is new patch to apply, I try to install it.

I use bash script (from cron) for checking for new patches and sending e-mail notification, and second script (runing manually) which uses patchadd command to install new patches (because smpatch update does't work on systems with zones).

I run checkout (witch smpatch analyze) every day and I don't want to get e-mail on every run of it.

Hello,

Please can you provide us with the following information and fowarded it to the "rsc-forum-inbound@sun.com", do not post this information on the forum:

Go to var/sadm/spool/cache/Database on the machine in question. There should be a single file there named

https*current.zip. Copy this file to some temporary location and unzip it. You should get two files, one named patchlist.delimited.

Do the following three things:

#grep ^120536 patchlist.delimited

#smpatch get

#uname -a

Have you used the recommend optionif so what was the output:

-x idlist=<file> option and exclude this patch

With regards to your enquiry for Update Manager not working on non-global zones. This is not strictly true there are somes limitation to what the smpatch command can do in this environment. The limitation of Update Manager in a non-global zone environment are detail in the FAQ below:

http://www.sun.com/service/sunupdate/faq.html

However this issue has been addressed in the latest revision of Sun Update - Sun Update Connection Client, System Edition 1.0.4 - patch 121119-05.

This can be download from the link below, along with instructions for installation and patch dependancies:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/getpatch.pl

E-mail has been sent.

Thank you for your notice, that smpatch is "fixed" now. I missed that information. As I can see, it is partially fixed. smpatch add -i <patch_number> works, but smpatch update is still borked (got something with error in -t transition while applying 121208-03 but already deleted log file)

Hello,

The latest revison of Sun Update v1.0.4, has an issue installing restart required patches with zones.

The issue is any restart required patches will not be installed. See bug 6386728.

The work around is remove the "-t" option from PATCHADD part when running /etc/init.d/installupdates.
