What is the difference between getupdates.sun.com and updateserver.sun.com?

I have a few headless Solaris 8 boxes which are now running Patch Manager CLI (SUNWpmgr v2.00). There are times when they can抰 access the patch hosting site (揜esponse code was 500?error message). Running 搒mpatch get patchpro.patch.source?returns https://updateserver.sun.com/solaris/. Now on a neighboring Solaris 10 box (SUNWpmgr v5.0) running 搒mpatch get patchpro.patch.source?returns https://getupdates.sun.com/solaris/.

If I reset patchpro_patch_source to use getupdates rather than updateserver on the Solaris 8 boxes it works fine (even when I can't get through to updateserver).

My first question is this: Is there a functional difference between getupdates.sun.com and updateserver.sun.com? Is getupdates.sun.com the new patchpro_patch_source of choice? Should I change all my Solaris 8 boxes over to using getupdates rather than updateserver?

Thanks!

David

getupdates.sun.com is targetted toward the Sun Update Connection clients. It uses most of the code that powers updateserver.sun.com but adds some features such as authentication and authorization as well as providing entitlement data to the Sun Update Connection Clients.

getupdates.sun.com should be fully compatible with the Patch Manager clients. We did not remove anything from the Patch Manager protocol. This hasn't been formally tested by our QA team, but I know some individuals who are using getupdates.sun.com as their patch source.

My recommendation would be to stay with updateserver.sun.com for now. We are working on fixing the availability issues that are impacting updateserver.sun.com.
