why UM sometimes does not display the updates

From time to time I have seen that UM does not report the updates automatically. I think I got this problem two or three times already.
I had to manually login under UM and click the 'Check for Updates' button. After that I have got a list of available patches.
any ideas why the UM fails to discover automatically the patches ?
When I click 'check for Updates' a list of patches is found.

Hi,
I mean I expect if there are new patches available the UM to be able to display this using its icon from the task bar. It does work sometimes by changing its color from green to yellow and red. Sometimes the icon stays green even if I discover myself manually the new list of patches.
Of course, it can always be possible that during that time there were no patches but when I manually opened the UM and clicked 'Check for Updates' then the list was visible under updates.sun.com too. But hard to belive that.
So in short: the icon stays green. If I click in UM 'check for Updates' then I get the new list of patches.
Next time I will check the icon and in the same time do a: smpatch analyze. If the smpatch analyze will return something back and if the UM's icon will be green colour then I would say... oppps. we have a new bug to fill in :)
