Update Manager gives a "Read System Analysis Data Error"

After installing patch 119107-06 I now get a "Read System Analysis Data Error" when the check for updates reaches the end of its analysis. The pop up window says:

Read System Analysis Data Error

There is an error in reading system analysis data. Click on "Check for Updates" to restart a system analysis. If the problem persists, report the issue to your sysadmin or Sun.

When I click "check for updates" again the same happens. Now I do not have a subscription, but I believe I should be able to get the security updates. The machine is NATed to the internet and another machine on the private network works fine (but that machine just had the latest Update Manager installed rather than a patch applied later).

Any ideas ?

This is a known bug scheduled to be fixed in the next release os Solaris 10. This bug doesn't impact on the listing and download of updates, without a subscription key you will indeed be able to get the security updates if you have registered. The error is due to a reporting

I still have this project has it been fixed can you explain some more about it? Is it an error that I get when there are no more updates? Please tell me more.

This "Read System Analysis Data Error" message is harmless. There is a bug in the UM that causes it to display this error when there are no updates available. You can pretend that instead of the error message, UM is just saying "Your system doesn't currently have any updates available".

This was a late regression bug that crept in just before the release. It should be fixed in the next release.

This is a problem that I have been fighting. I contacted Sun support on this but haven't heard from them. Now you have me curious. On what do you base your statements? Is there a particular bug number for this? will a fix come through a patch?

The fix will be included in the next release as previously stated. The update will be delivered as a patch as well as being available for download. The bug ID is # 6309151 although it is not currently publicly available.

With regards to the Sun Support issue, can I ask how you contacted them for support and if known which group took on board your issue?

Being rather new to the Solaris world, I am not sure what you mean by "next release". Do you mean Solaris 11?A later build of 10?As for the id not being publicly available, I wish they would make it public so I might have a better idea of what's going on without all this searching.

To get the support I called 800-872-4SUN. I am not positive but I think it was the installation group who took this case.

By next release we mean the next release of Sun Update Connection. There's not really much additional information contained in the bug report so you're not missing anything. What is the case number of the case you raised when calling 800-872-4SUN?

Thanks for the answer. I might not be missing much but it would be nice if it was made known so I and others could find it in searching for help. The case number Sun gave me is in this e-mail subject. I don't really understand the second number in the [ ]

In my case, that's not true that this bug does not have impact on updates. I had several updates available but not installed before

this bug has appeared. Now, when I see this 'analysis data error',

my list of available updates is empty and there is no way to see

those previously available updates.

I would have thought the error message was fairly self explanatory.

update manager/smpatch is not supported on machines with local zones.

I posted some scripts for patching machines a couple of weeks ago.

Sun says their working on supporting zones. But who knows when that will be released

This is REALLY annoying, and it's not "when you don't have any patches".

I just got the new Ultra 20. Downloaded the latest version of the update manager, and get this error. (Nevermind that my subscription key doesn't work either, but that's another problem that I'm sure is going to take hours to resolve with Sun).

Of course, they're plenty of patches needed:

Well! That was fun.

Now when I start my X session (JDS), all the applets crash and need to restarted! And I can't seem to find anything in the patches that would cause it.

On a side note, at least they're being very consistant on how they break things. My Sunblade 1000 is doing the same thing after the last set of patches.

Except - updatemanager works on the sunblade. Still is broken on the Ultra 20.

Could we maybe have a clue as to when this is going to be fixed?

Firstly what exactly has changed since your first post? When you say "Now.." do you mean "Now after I've installed all the available patches"? What is your current output of smpatch analyze?

Just guessing at this stage but could it be patch 120100-03 that is causing the JDS issue?

Did you get your subscription key issue resolved? If not please describe the issue.

I mean, "wow that was fun" after installing the patches via smpatch (because updatemanager is broken) and finding the applets crashing upon starting my X session.

I figured out which patch caused the JDS problem - I backed out an Xorg update patch (I'd have to go back and look at the number - I'm at work at the moment and the Ultra20 is my new work-at-home machine). I need to figure that out anyway because I have to back it out on this sunblade as well.

Still, the crux of the matter is that updatemanager (on the x86 Ultra20) is broken. It gives the error that is the subject of this thread ("Read System Analysis Data Error") when you try and check for patches. The problem is not that there are not any applicable patches, as 'smpatch analize' and 'smpatch update' find lots of needed patches and installs them.

> Did you get your subscription key issue resolved? If

I have not had time to do so. I own an e-commerce business and the last two weeks have been insane with christmas. I figured I'd take it up with them next week when I have time.

The issue is that the key (at least, what should be the key - the paperwork that you get with the Ultra20 deal isn't all that clear and there's only one thing in the support agreement paperwork that the "What keys are accepted" page on the sun website says should be a key) doesn't work. Putting it into the update manager gives you an error saying it's not a valid key.

The other issue that may be the cause (and may be a big headache) is that after years of my mother asking what she could buy for her adult son for Xmas and not really getting an answer, I pointed her at the Sun website in Oct and said "If you really have to buy something, buy this".

I was kidding. She didn't think I was. I'm not complaining ;)

But she created her own sun store account, which if the key is linked to, could be the problem. I was going to call her and get her login this weekend and see if that worked.

Well its now March 2006 and I was wondering if there had been a fix to this.

My problem is on a new Ultra 20 I just got [same as these postings] and I get the same error message "There is an error in reading system analysis data. Click on "Check for Updates" to restart the system analysis. If the problem persists, report the issue to your sysadmin or Sun." I just downloaded Update Manager and I am running version 1.0. I know there are security patches because I just got tired and went to sunsolve and downloaded all the recommended and security patches, my system got patched. I'm just wondering if anybody knows when this might be fixed and if SUN has known about it for so long [4 months at least] why recommend using update manager?

On a related note I upgraded to Sol 10 an older Sunfire V250 last year and the update manager seemed to work great. I few weeks ago I saw a patch for it and also installed it. Ever since I have not received any more patches. It could be that there have been none, now I'm just suspicious and I will have to check.

Normally update manager works fine.

I usually get a couple of new patches per day showing up.

If you don't have a support contract you should only get the recommend patches, which appear at a slower rate. But still fairly regularly.

So if no patches are shown, theres definitely a problem.

I presume your machines are registered (which you can do without a support contract) since running update manager will prompt you do to that the first time its run.

Is there any error output showing up in /var/adm/messages when you run update manager (or smpatch analyze).

ok now I am confused!! I do think its just the prior error stating there are no updates or something like that.

I just ran update manager and it worked!! I have been trying for 2 days getting the same message [new ultra 20]. On purpose I only installed 17 patches and left about the same. I rebooted and again the same message.

Funny thing is the X-server won't start on the console now, I currently am using XDMCP but need the X-server to work. Go figure I think I've seen this before, but it does piss me off that this is a spanking brand new system and things already don't work.

I did not see any errors in /var/adm/messages, I ran smpatch analyze it did list all the patches I chose not to install [to test this]. I think there is something worng with Update Manager.

Thanks again Robert.

Well the one good thing is I ran smpatch analyze on my older SunFire v250 and it did say "No patches requied". So thats a relief. I think the problem is only on the new Ultra 20. Maybe there is a problem with the x86 version. Thanx again-James

Can you verify which version of Update Connection you have installed?$ showrev -p | egrep -e 119107 -e 121118For the x86 architecture patch 119107-06 equates to UC 1.0.1, patch 121118-03 equates to UC 1.0.3 and patch 121118-05 equates to the current UC 1.0.4.

I am having the same issue. I have a registered version of solaris 10 running on a sunfire v100.

smpatch analyze reports that there are no patches are required.

I was one of those who had the issue last year, and I guess it came back again. Anyway...

If I runshowrev -p | egrep -e 119107 -e 121118I receive

I had a similar problem here, and after looking around i found this:

#updatemanager -debug

This runs update manager in debug mode.

Running this I've found that this directory error in my system:

/var/sadm/spool/cache/updatemanager/analysis.results

The path in bold was missing.

I just created the missing directories and update manager does not complain anymore.

Hope this helps!
