Update Connection Proxy Server, can it support smpatch clients?
I've installed the Update Connection Proxy Server and it works great for Update Connection clients. However can it support smpatch clients also? I've tried setting the smpatch clients to point at the proxy server with -
smpatch set patchpro.patch.source=http://myproxy:3816/solaris/
but it errors out. Am I using the wrong URL or is it simply not supported? The Update Connection is great for GUI'ed machines but for multiple machines that could get painful.
I don't want to use *both* on a given machine, just the proxy server and then smpatch for various and sundry others. Hmm..will it work for Solaris 8 and 9 clients too?
Thanks,
Doug

Yes, in fact Update Manager (under the hood) is an instance of an smpatch client.

What type of smpatch clients are you using (Solaris 10, Solaris 9)?
Also what type of error is occuring from smpatch and in the logs at /var/patchsvr/logs on the Proxy?

Neither, the URL is correct and it *should* be supported.

Understood.

The Sun Update Connection Proxy should support Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 patch manager clients. Please report any issues you have with such a scenario.
Hope this helps

I installed Sun Patch Manager 2 on a solaris 8 system.
I then confirgured smpatch to get patches directly from https://getupdates.sun.com/solaris/
smpatch analyze listed a bunch of patches to install.
I then changed smpatch config to connect to http:/my_sol_10_server:3816/solaris/
smpatch analyze comes back with message "No patches required." which is of course not right !!
while smpatch analyze was running I did a netstat -a | grep 3816 on "my_sol10_server" and saw a connection established with my solaris 8 system , so those systems are talking ....
What is wrong in my config if has you said update connection proxy should support Solaris 8 Clients ?

I have this same problem, I have installed patch manager 2.0 on a brand new installed solaris 9 box, and pointed it to my update server with connection proxy and each time I get "No Patches Required" Hard to beleive that after I just installed this bare Solaris 9 with no patches.

This is not a problem on Solaris 10, it looks like its a problem serving older smpatch clients like on solaris 8 and solaris 9.

Yep, we need to do this here too. We need one box (Sol10) that can serve up 8/9/10
All this GUI stuff is nice for our desktops, but not really practical for managing hundreds of servers in a commercial environment where production needs to follow and be consistent with dev and test patch rollouts.

This problem does exist on Solaris 10 with OS installed smpatch. I pointed to the local patch server and got the same results as with the Solaris 8 and 9 clients.
It should be noted that the cache dir on the clients gets populated with patchdb.zip and detectors.jar but still says "No patches required" (obviously in error)
I also noted that the patchsvr logs show the connections fine and no errors in any of them.
I have not tried a Sol10 client with the new updateconnection software yet.
could it have something to do with these clients not being registered? I also noticed that the web-site is different with updateconnection.
any ideas? or should I open a support case?
