Solaris resource site

I'm thinking about setting up a small site that I hope will grow to become something of a 'self-help' guide for Solaris. It will be authored by anyone who knows what they're doing, ie you guys (I hope!)

Basically, what I want to do is keep a list of functions and have some guides written on how to use them in a more practical fashion than the MAN pages. I'd also like some basic walkthroughs, like explaining how to configure certain features, like maybe SENDMAIL. I'm hoping that experienced users will be willing to share their knowledge. The target audience is 'hobbyist' and beginners although I hope it will offer information to advanced and intermediate users too.

Primarilly I want to focus on Solaris 10. If anyone has used PHP.net and gone through the functions pages, you'll probably know what kind of thing I'm planning on. The idea is that over time the site will grow into a valuable resource that is easier to search than these types of forums. Of course I would like to include a forum for questions and maybe a small community. I plan to have links to downloads too, for software that is of some value, maybe like Firefox etc, for people who haven't been able to find the SPARC versions of software.

What I need to know though is if there will be any of you guys willing to help out with the writing of the site. It will all be through an editor on the site, you would just need to log in. I already have a number of sites using a simillar system. As something of a beginner myself I'm not likely to be able to write much on my own, I need a lot of help. I've noticed that the UNIX communities seem much more willing to help newbies than the Windows guys and I'm hoping that some of you guys would be willing to impart some of your knowledge? I'm not even going to create the site unless I know that it will get some support. (naturally it will be all database driven and easily searchable, you have my word, your efforts will not go unread!)

Let me know if anyone is interested, if so I'll get it written and contact you when it's done.

Cheers guys

Actually, I think the Solaris community needs some better

ways to link all the existing resources and keep them all

updated and in sync - I constantly see the same questions

asked in a variety of forums. There is a huge knowledge

base already - here is an example for Solaris on x86, just

from Sun's perspective:

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/collections/solarisx86.html

Ideas on how to get the right answer to a question would be

most welcome.

Tks

I agree that BigAdmin is an invaluable resource, but I think that there is a better way to do it. I'm a firm believer in helping others and learning as I go. I'm hoping that as people create articles that others will read them and learn as they appear, not just look for them when they need them.

I also like the way PHP.net's site works where the official descriptions are followed by users posting other ideas below, including code examples. Doing it this way would allow users to see how to actually use the functions. To be honest I rarely find MAN pages helpful. Yeah, to a certain degree, but they aren't half as helpful as they could be!

If nobody is interested in contributing then I'll pass it off as a nice idea and nothing more. I would like to do more with this though, I have the web-programming skills to make the site a reality, it's just a case of whether there is enough interest from the community to help build the content.

Anyone else have any comments on this?

Hi,I have already started working on something similar, with a view of helping newbies learn solaris. The site is under development currently at: http://solarismadeeasy.com/ . Do join me if you are interested in this effort. Thanks, sisiro

Maybe now is the best time to start independant support sites? I just received my BigAdmin monthly email:

> Access Changes to SunSolve and Sun System Handbook

> Some information will remain available to all customers

> while certain resources will require a service plan or

> contract. These access changes will occur on April 5, 2005.

Can't say I like the sounds of that all that much. SGI are like that, they often won't touch you unless you have a support contract, I'd hate to see Sun go the same way
