S10 will not install on FreeBSD and Linux friendly hardware

I have been utterly unable to successfully install S10 on hardware that FreeBSD and many linux flavors work on. Can someone *please* point me to informational resources that might help me understand what I need to do to get it working?

I posted a query last week, but the support volunteers apparently don't think my problem is worthy of attention or something.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. It would appear that *ONE*, that's right *ONE* HP desktop machine is known to run Solaris 10.I think I'll wait until Solaris 10 has matured a bit before I try again.I sincerely appreciate your help.

So what's your problem with Solaris 10?

The HCL http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ lists 20 - 30 HP,

Hewlett Packard and Compaq desktop / server systems, plus

10 - 20 HP / Compaq laptops.

And that probably does not include lots of other hp / compaq

systems where the users didn't bother to send a

"Reported to Work" message to Sun, for inclusing of their system

into the HCL (http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/overview.html).

I don't have a "problem" with Solaris 10. It's just quite useless to me in its current state. I am quite saddened by this as I used to be a big fan of Solaris back when Sparc was still a player in IT.

It may be useful to others fortunate enough to have the type of x86 hardware that is compatible.

For me, it's a simple binary condition: Solaris 10 just doesn't work.

I have great hope that Solaris 10 may be a viable FreeBSD alternative one day.

That day, unfortunately, it not today.

Thanks for asking!

I can sucessfully configure and install disk1. After that, the system wants to boot from the hard drive to complete the installation.

When the HD boot is attempted, a long pause then:

Timeout on target 0 lun 0. Initiating recovery.

I have reviewed every piece of documentation that I could find regarding what could be causing this and what I could do for corrective action. My guess is that my SCSI hardware is not supported in some way, but there's woefully little information on Solaris 10 x86 hardware compatibility.

I went through all the "device adding" kludge at boot time, no affect. My system can only boot Solaris 10 from the CD media.

I sincerely appreciate your attention. I'm usually really good at self help in an open source environment. But I have no source code, so it's *REALLY* hard to troubleshoot this without source code.

In case it helps, I have an old Dell WS-400 with an Adaptec

SCSI controller and two SCSI disks. I just installed Solaris 10

on it from an IDE DVD drive. I had no problems at all with

the installation. Everything works.

Hello all ,

I have the exact same problem

I attempted it on an Adaptec 39160 ultra160 adapter

SCSI Bios version :3.1 (the latest).

Mother board : Supermicro S2DGE (Dual xeon pII 500 Mhz) + 1GB SDRAM.

When the HD boot is attempted, a long pause then:

Timeout on target 0 lun 0. Initiating recovery.

It display 4 times, and a long pause.

The harddrive is Seagate 336752LW

Fedora linux just installs fine.

And solaris 8 X86 installed fine too.

I'll try using the solaris 8 X86 driver available in

www.adaptec.com.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated..
