FTP GUI for Solaris

I hope this is a good spot to get the word out to someone who can make a difference.

I'll just say it. Solaris (x86 and Sparc) needs a reliable and powerful X-based FTP program. Something like gFTP.

I realize there are pre-compiled versions of these types of programs at Blastwave, but it's a pain to TRY to get all that to work correctly in Solaris. Security concerns prevail too.

The only thing I can see that Solaris 10 Release 11/04 (b72) is missing to really make it an even more powerful desktop is a good GUI FTP program for the users. Everything else has been made easier to push Solaris closer to the desktop market. I'd love to see that!

My customer uses it to pull down many files a day; each ranging between 400MB to 4.5GB off a dedicated DS-3 line. We currently use gFTP ( I was lucky to get it to work with Solaris 9/Sparc). My customer, and I, would feel better if all software came from Sun, compiled for Solaris, by Solaris compiling gurus.

I think this would benefit the community greatly too.

Please pass this comment on to someone who can make a difference.

Thanks, and keep up the great work. There are a few of us Solaris people left here.

uhm, what about nautilus? On the JDS desktop open "This Computer" or "Documents" and put in an ftp URL.For that matter, mozilla has a reasonable ftp client, butmost people prefer the drag-n-drop you get in nautilus. -- richard

Richard,

Thanks for the advise. I have tried out Nautilus and it does, naturally, seem to work. Some things that my customer would definately miss is the transfer information that is provided in most robust FTP tools. For example, current transfer speeds, Stacking jobs with options of cancelling certain jobs in the middle of the stack.

Good advise though.

Cheers,

Oh, you mean something like the Sun Download Manager? It has these features, but isn't quite as easy to use as nautilus. For that matter mozilla download manager allowsthis as well. Your options are many... -- richard
