Configuring ST3802110A Barracuda 7200.9 (80 Gb HD) for Ultra 5

Hi Folks,

I'm new to the SUN realm, so please excuse my ignorance if its obvious.

I have the following Confg:

Ultra 5 Sparc IIi 270Mhz

OBP 3.31( I believe its the latest)

256Mb

Solaris 8 (not sure if the latest patch has been installed)

Pri HD WD 30Gb. <- working and fine

* Sec HD - ST3802110A Barracuda 7200.9 (80 Gb HD)

I'm trying to install the secondary HD but unsuccessfull, meaning it could only detact 11Gb+

I've read quite a number of articles on WD Hardisk 120Mb and Seagate 120 working fine. One has mentioned that Seagate 80Gb could only provide 16Gb or so...

I've tried some other geometry for it to get 78Gb but it fails when I try to label it...

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

Cheers!

Hello.

I had an Ultra 5 and ran a 128GB HD (as primary HD). I used Solaris 9.

For a secondary HD only the OS (Solaris) should be responsible for detecting the HD size so OpenBoot should not be the problem (a primary HD of this size requires a recent OpenBoot version).

Maybe you should look for the latest OS patches.

Hi Martin,

Will try and download the latest Solaris 8 patches and try it out.

On the other hand when I tried making my 80Gb hardisk as primary (OBP is latest for Ultra 5 "3.31") and installed Solaris 8; during swap input it gave a max range for the swap which was 11Gb+, hence I aborted the installation.

I don't know how to configure the 80Gb Hardisk in OBP mode. Only thing I know is that its able to detect the model of the 80Gb HD when I issue the command probe-ide. Other than that I let Solaris 8 upon installation do the rest, but this would lead me to 11Gb only...

Btw: is the flat ribbon cable important. I got it from an old Win PC that uses 2 IDE disk, not sure if its Ultra ATA compliant. My Ultra 5 came wth one hardisk hence I needed a cable that supports 2 HD.

Thanks for any input.

Cheers!
