Ultra 2 hard disk info needed
Hi all, sparc newbie here.
I inherited this beast (specs below) and the first thing I want to do is replace the disks (they are really loud).
I understand that I can go bigger than 9 gig. Is there a limit as to how big I can go? I've searched and I can't find that info anywhere.
I would hate to replace the disks with something just as loud, can you recommend something relatively quiet?
Thanks.
edit: my original setup - 2x 4 gig HD

Some older SCSI drives tend to start to whine when the platters start to wear out, I think there is a limited numbers of running hours on computer drive. I have heard users post that +18GB drives have been installed in a Ultra 2, but I have not experienced this personally. Have you thought of an external Sun Uni Pack, I think these can support up to 36GB single drive and more for 3rd party ( I think there is also 3rd party fibre channel single drive enclosures out there ). With this config you could still use the supported 9GB internally.

Hello,
you can use higher capacity internal disks, but won't get any speed advantage from the faster interface. The controller is limited to 20-MB/sec (fast/wide SCSI-2). Probably the fast turning disks (10000-15000rpm) require better cooling.
Btw. there is a french language website http://www.sunquebec.com/ ...

Well for the time being I snapped up a brand new 9gig IBM drive on ebay ($20 inc. shipping) & I am enjoying some peace & quiet. The drive is quieter than the fans.
The whining from those old SCSI disks was torture, the thing is I have never heard old IDE drives get that loud as they age. Thanks again.

Could well be, but here is my (limited) experience with drives from the late 90s;
SCSI; 1 out of 4 dead
IDE; 2 or 3 out of 20 or so dead
And the quietest SCSI disk is louder than any of the IDE drives.
