Sun Ultra1

I have a Sun Ultra 1 Creator which currently has Solaris 8. I am currently downloading Solaris 10 and planning to reinstall from scratch. The Ultra 1 is pretty old and I dont have the password. Is there anything extra I need to do to make sure the Ultra1 boots from the cd-rom?

Has anyone had any expeirces running this operation on this machine? Does it run pretty well?

Solaris 10 will not install to any of the various Ultra-1 models.

The hardware is too old.

As of this date, you would need at least an Ultra-2.

This link mentions the current list of supported platforms:

In particular, see the footnote on that web page that states:

Please Note: 32-bit Solaris kernel is no longer supported, nor is there support for UltraSPARC processors running at or below 200 MHz.

If you have a need to install it to something so as to learn the various new OS features, then consider using a PC.

Solaris 10 runs very well on most any 500MHz -- 1GHz PC.

You would only miss the OBP functionality, but your current Ultra-1 system can give you that.

Pull down the disk images for Solaris 8 or Solaris 9 and reinstall one of them, instead.

Lastly, a Google search on "Solaris root password" will give you whatever guidance you'll need for that.
