Seagate

Dear Sir / Madam,

I have to install a ST336807LW hard-disk in a Sun Ultrasparc 5 workstation (that does not support LBA) wih Solaris 2.6. as operating system. The disk is recognised, but I cannot mount it because when I execute the "format" command I receive an error message and a "core" file is installed in the directory "/dev/rdsk". Could you please tell me what is the reason for this? I have installed other Seagate disks and the workstation has been working fine.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I want to ask a few questions, first.

Please gather the following items of information and paste them back into this discussion thread.

... run the following commands:

uname -a

prtconf -V

describe the following:

are there any adapter cards installed?

are there any external peripherals, and what are those peripherals?

That will help us to begin to understand the computer system a little bit better.

By the way, LBA has no relationship with what may be occurring.

That's a PC thing.

my question is how can the U5 recognise a scsi hard drive without a scsi pci card? which card are you using?most likely since you are using such an old version of Solaris, there may be a problem with a 36 gig drive...haroldkarl

That is why I asked for the other info.

U-5 with external SCSI or with a lash-up funky kit ?

SS-5 and trying to use SCA interfaced disks ?

Never mind that Seagate doesn't list a ST336807LW drive in their product line, per their web site.

Too little accurate info to provide any response.

Let's wait for those details.

it is a 68 pin drive..

what other drive type could a SS-5 use? they do take 80 pin, SCA drives...

I am just being picky...
