18 GB disk Ultra 2 E

I read the post before & am geting close, but cannot ge all the way.

I have a U2 E (2 processor 512 MB) , OpenBoot 3.11 Solais 2.9

Bought a 18 GB IBM Ultra disk, added jumpers and installed.

boot -r

I can see the disk in format, but it does no know the specs. How can I find them ? No one tells tracks/sectors anymore in their datasheets.I am not under suport so I do not think OB 3.5 is an option.

Tips/Pointers/RTFMs appreciated

Andy

jumpers? you don't need no stinkin' jumpers! please don't tell me that you set a scsi address... what hard drive? they all should have a web site... why do you need tracks/sectors?

I have yet to throw a new drive in a Sun boxen, so, I may not know what you need... open the SMC and you should be able to add the drive... you might open format and give it a volume label....

oh, IBM, you still should be able to find the drive... you just don't need to set jumpers...

As I respond to this thread, the OBP patch is still a free download.

It will get your system up to ver. 3.25.0

Go to Sunsolve and search on 104169

I knew it was discussed somewhere and somewhen in these forums.

I used the forum search on keywords "obp" and "ultra-2" and had to go through a bunch of postings but eventually found the patch number.

Then I used the patch number at Sunsolve to confirm it's still available.

I worked for Sun a long time ago & then you needed to set the jumpers for the SCSI address. So I did.

WHen I run format, it doe not recognize the disk (IBM/Hitachi Ultrastar DDYS-T18350) so I choose other and it asked me for cylinders, heads, etc:

I gave up... you have to go to the Hitachi site for the specs...

otherwise, why did you address the drive to 8? that still shouldn't affect ID'ing the drive... you know that this drive is healthy?

*** oh yes, remove the stupid jumper***

knowing IBM, there may be some stoopid jumper, other than the scsi addresses...

OPB shouldn't mess with drive size... but, you might update your U2... just google 104169 Sun.... you will get the link and update it... you will have to change the jumper... you do have the U2 service manual?
