SunBlade 100 no video, no nothing..

HI, I just got a sun Blade 100, the problem is that I get no video or output at all, I turn the power on and it seems to have power, cdrom works, LED is on, fans are working, etc. If I take the memory out (2x256 sticks), it beeps 3 times and then it turns off, otherwise i seems like its booting, beep once and the stay in silence... any ideas? I tested 3 different minotors (one of the is a SUn monitor and no go, no signal...

I connected a null modem cable from my PC serial1 to the serial connection and this is all I get:

... it continues endless...

not even sure what this means... is the cable a wrong cable? (it reads null modem on it )

The light on the keyboard goes green for a second and the off..

The LED light stays on.

Any ideas, could it be the NVRAM circuit or the machine is just dead.. the manul said 100-6889 as the part number for the NVRAM but I dont know if this could be the problem.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

do you have this document yet? <a href="http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/806-3416-10.pdf " target="_blank"> http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/80 6-3416-10.pdf</a>

which slots are you putting the memory?

have you tried holding the Stop and N keys down right after you start the computer? hold them down until you get the monitor display...

see what happens.

Hi,

I dont have a SUN usb keyboard right now, I am using a regular USB, I found out that if I do press the power button twice (like a mouse click) right after the beep it should act as a STOP-A, it seems like the 'one' beep is normal on botting the system.

I have the manual and I cant get much help from it, thanks. I will try to borrow one sun usb keboard from work tomorrow morning.

I also notice that even th I dont get any video if I unplugg the monitor cable from the system then I get the 'no signal' on the monitor, so this means there is some kind of signal to it but it does not show.

There is no Hard drive on the system right now, but I should get to the OPB prompt (OK) as it is.

Memory is on (see page c-23 - appendix C) U3 and U2, if I place the momory stick on the other 2 slots then and turns off.

Hi Michael,

So, is the CPU the problem then? I am trying to find out if there is any way to salvage this unit, or just dump it to the trash... which I dont want to do, I may be able to get a CPU from ebay for not much I think

Do you think just changing the CPU would it fix it?. Is there any other test I can do to make sure?

Thanks!

Also, I have been reading/searching on this forum, I can see that some people has had the same problem, but they get more info like:

"

@(#) Sun Ultra 5/10 UPA/PCI 3.15 Version 2 created 1998/11/10 10:35

Probing keyboard Done

%o0 = 0000.0000.0000.4001

@(#) Sun Ultra 5/10 (Darwin) POST 2.3.1 (Build No. 521) 16:33 on 08/07/98

CPU: UltraSPARC-LC (MHz: 270 Ecache Size: 256KB)

Init POST BSS

Init Syste

NVRAM

NVRAM Battery Detect Test ... etc...

"

Or something like that, I am not getting anything just the message I posted earlier, the message repeats from the moment I turn the system on.

I took the memory out and I got a message saying the there is no memory on any of the banks and then the system turned off. I added back and it get the same message, I think I can rule out the memory, the system can see it.

It leads me to believe that the CPU is bad...

I will test with a 'real' sun USB keyboard today.

Minimum memory is a single DIMM in U2. Have you tried each DIMM in U2? I don't know what Trap Type 64 & 68 are as indicated by the TT Row. The Trap Level (TL) normally counts down from 5 to 1 and then gives a RED State or Fatal Reset and then starts all over again, as you are experiencing.

I'm leaning towards CPU.

Hi,

Yes, I tried both stick individualy, same result, interesting enough, I found this page:

<a href="http://www.itworld.com/nl/unix_sys_adm/04032002/" target="_blank">http://www.itworld.com/nl/unix_sys_adm/04032002/</a>

it talks about TL 68 and it seems to be the CPU, every indication appoint to that, I am looking into getting one cheap...

HI,

I managed to buy a "New" CPU 500Mhz\512kb-p/n100-7270 - (yes, new never used!! still in the original box) and a 256MB stick for Blade 100, just in case the memory I have is no good.

Not bad, for the new CPU $15.99 (including shipping -lucky!) and the Memory $21.00 (including shipping)

eBaY is good sometimes!

Just to wait a week for them to arrive, Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Thanks for all your help!!

I have a SunBlade100 also with a no video signal and was wondering if

the cpu cured the problem?Mine, the cd light remains on indefinitely,I think it bad compatably with system it is Lite-On model.I have noted what I think to be a bad jumper setting on MoBo for NVRAM.

Was told the keyboard could be causing system wedge,so I got a Sun

USB for it and a mouse, but its sitting with no vid signal.Maybe a vid card?

HI,

The CPU and the Memory were bad, as soon as I changed these 2 it work like a charm...

I installed the CPU first and then no video still, but not the same error message, I replace the memory and then all good. so for just 36.00 US I got it fixed, I think it as a good thing.. :-)
