USB keyboard on ultra 5 workstation
Hey all,
I have an Ultra 5 workstation and a PC at home, and I wanted to control both computers from 1 set of mouse, keyboard and monitor. I carefully selected the switch (I used the Aten CS-62U, which is compatible with PC,Mac+Sun) and a PCI USB card with NEC chipset.
However, I don't seem to get the keyboard or mouse to work on the system. I'm currently runing Solaris 10, so that shouldn't be a problem. Both mouse and keyboard are Sun equipment.
In the /etc/path_to_inst, there are references to the mouse and the keyboard, and if I look in the messages, it says that USB mouse + keyboard are running at 1.10 speed. So everything seems to be in order, except for the fact that they simply don't work.
I've tried to forcably obtain input by redirecting input from the device (vi /var/tmp/test < /device/etc...), and I was able to catch some garbled input, but that's really all.
Any help would be welcome.
Kind regards,
Rob.

Hey all,
thanks for the replies.
to m-lennon:
The USB card is not detecte by the OBP: show-devs in OK prompt does not show any path to an USB card. The KVM switch should not be (and is not) visible to the system. The system simply sees an USB keyboard and USB mouse attached.
to error:
to USB card is a Sweex 4 Port USB 2.0 PCI Card with NEC chipset.
I'll give your memory stick test a try, but it seems to me that this should be successful, as I was able to redirect some input from the keyboard to a testfile.
Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks again,
Rob

I've tried the USBstick suggestion, an this seems to work fine. If I issue the command:
rmformat -l
the USB storage device shows up.
However, I was wrong about the card not showing up at the OK prompt. In the device tree, the card is listed, but not the keyboard or the mouse.
I've tried to manually make a new alias for keyboard and mouse in the PROM, but this has had no effect (except for my computer reverting to ttya for input :) )
I've also tried rumbling around with the kbd command and the /etc/default/kbd file, but this didn't do anything either.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Rob.

Hello Rob,
the USB keyboard and mouse aren't usable at the OBP level. These system's OBP lacks the USB support.
If you have a support contract (=can access contract only documents) there are documents that explain the background.
<a href="http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t= msg&goto=5228" target="_blank"><b>USB on Ultra10</b></a>
The links given in this thead don't work. The documents
#72414 (Configuring a USB keyboard and mouse for use with a USB add-on adapter card) ,
#72416 (IOGEAR MiniView Universal Serial Bus (USB)/Keyboard Video Mouse(KVM): How to configure on Sun Blade[TM] 100... )
#70986 (How to Change the Layout (Language) of a Keyboard ) and
#72328 (USB KVM and Sun Systems)
have been moved from public (free) to private (contract only).
The important document is 72414.
70986 applies to the referenced thread (using a spanish USB keyboard) and 72416 is about a particular USB KVM.

Hello.
<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr>& lt;td class="quote">

However you can use the USB Keyboard and Mouse on X-Window level. Therefore you must edit the X-Server's configuration file (/usr/openwin/server/etc/OWconfig).
If you want to use multiple mice (or keyboards) at the same time you must use special software (which is no longer available).
