Installing Solaris On SPARCstation 5

I recently bought a SunSPARCstaion 5 off eBay last year.Along with Solaris 7 for SPARC computers. I got a connector for it so i could use to with my monitor and a sun type 5c keybord and mouse for it. When I fired the machines up it seemed to be booting, but then it stops. At an error about not being able to connect to the network. Im not a sun expert at all give me a mac or pc and ill solve the problem in 5minutes but have never touched a sun workstation. I dont really want the machine opn my network just as a standalone solaris workstation to play around with and such. The system came with no cdrom drive! Ouch! So I bought a sony scsi cdrom drive. Configured it and put it in the solaris 7 cd. pressed stop a to get it to the ok prompt and typed boot cdrom. It reboots and the cdrom drive light turns amber like its reading it but doesnt boot. It just sits there. and says Can't boot from file/device. In the manual for solaris it means the installation program cant find the solaris cd in the systems cd-rom drive. Im a little frustrated at this point and are about ready to chuck the thing out the window. I did today sit down and on my pc type out everything the screen said as it was booting up. Maybe someone here can find something I over looked. It has Solaris 2.5.1 and it is a SPARCstation5 model 170 with a Sun Turbo GX graphics card.

do a search on block size for the cdrom... 512 sounds right? Sun boxen are very picky on cdroms... maybe the Sony can change block size... and it is a scsi cdrom, right? had to ask...

don't know how much ram it will need for Solaris 7.

also, check stickie notes about tip connection.... null modem cable, serial port and windoze "terminal" program... but it isn't necessary for this problem.

maybe find a toshiba or a plextor scsi cdrom... Sun likes them..

good luck,

haroldkarl

Ok do a stop A

type in

ok> setenv auto-boot? false

ok> reset

ok> probe-scsi-all

can you see the cdrom

if you can check the target id of it. it should be 6 i think its been a long time.

if yes continue if no go on ebay and buy a sun cdrom or external cdrom for it ( sun one)

ok> boot cdrom -s to boot the cd into single user just to test

if it works reboot and do boot cdrom and re install the box

if you want to boot the os on the disk type in boot -s

your box is moaning becaus it is looking for either a server or a NFS shared resource on the network and cant find it.

got it from reutters then!
