Ultra 10 with added memory won't boot

I have an Ultra 10 with 256 MB (2x128) of RAM that is working fine. I just added 512 MB (2x256) of RAM and now it won't boot. The proper amount of RAM is displayed during POST and it begins booting, but after a few seconds of the twirling \|/- it hangs and never continues booting.

I have tried switching the memory between the 2 banks and booting with just the 2x256 but it behaves the same in all cases. It still boots fine with just the 2x128's.

What might be the problem or how can I diagnose it? The memory was pulled from a working system so I believe the 2x256 is good.

Thanks,

Kevin

there is a chance the two sets are different speed... are they all 50ns or is one pair 60ns... ===are they all Sun branded?only guess I can come up with...haroldkarl

Hello Kevin,

is the OBP revision current (3.31) ?

Did you take antistatic precautions when changing the memory ? Due to the fact that the system doesn't boot with only the 256MB modules, they might got damaged.

Attach to the console port and enable diagnostics.

setenv auto-boot? false

setenv diag-switch? true

setenv diag-level max

reset

Mixing pairs with different speed is supported, the timing for the slower pair (60ns) is used.

The memory is 50ns and is Samsung, not Sun memory.

The OBP is 3.11 so I will look into updating it.

I enabled diagnostics but just using a monitor, not a serial console, so some things scrolled off before I could see it, but I saw one line recognizing the memory and no errors. If I proceed to boot at the "ok" prompt it starts for a few seconds then hangs.

Was the other system an Ultra 10? I think there may be problems using non-Sun RAM in Sun equipment.

Ok, I updated the BIOS to the latest and now on boot with all the memory in (2x128 and 2x256) it sees 768 MB but it says:Post On Self Test Failed. Cause: Memory Bank 1So, is it safe to assume the memory is bad or since it is non-Sun memory that is the problem?
