Boot cdrom problem - solaris 9 Ultra 10

Hello,

Firstly, I am new to solaris and sun so any help is greatly appreciated. I have spent a great deal of time reading this forum and I have not managed to fix this problem and I hope that I can include all the information needed to get a solution.

I am trying to boot from the CDROM of my Ultra 10 to install Solaris 9 on to a new blank HD. Both devices are IDE and I have plugged them into my Windows comp and they read everything fine.

I have downloaded the sol-9-u7-sparc-v1.iso and burned it at 2x using Nero on a XP machine.

The problem is that when I type 'boot cdrom' I get:

-

Boot Device: /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/<a href="mailto:cdrom&#64;2" target="_blank">cdrom@2</a>,0:f file and args:

Can't open boot device

-

probe-ide gives:

-

Device 0 (Primary Master)

ATA Model:IC35L040AVER07-0

Device 1 (Primary Slave)

Removable ATAPI Model: CRD-8322B

Device 2 (Secondary Master)

Not Present

Device 3 (Secondary Slave)

Not Present

-

I tried to set a new alias to ensure that the path to the CDROM is correct:

-

ok show-disks

a) /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/cdrom

b) /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/disk

c) /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/ebus/fdthree:14,3023f0

...

nvalias solboot /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/<a href="mailto:cdrom&#64;0" target="_blank">cdrom@0</a>,0

-

So now I have:

-

ok devalias solboot

solboot /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/<a href="mailto:cdrom&#64;0" target="_blank">cdrom@0</a>,0

ok boot solboot

Boot device: /pci1f,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/<a href="mailto:cdrom&#64;0" target="_blank">cdrom@0</a>,0 File and Args:

Can't read disk label

Can't read disk label package

Can't open boot device

-

I have also ran the 'test-all' command and there are no problems there at all.

If you need any more information please do not hesiate to ask I'll be checking ths post religiously!!

Thanks,

Jon

Hello Jon,

the alias for your cdrom is wrong.

I would suggest that you review page 7-9 of the <b>Sun Ultra 10 Service Manual </b> (Part-No. 805-7764-12). This manual came with your system or is still available for download from the Sun System Handbook..

But I would suggest moving the cdrom-drive to the "standard" location, by attaching as master to the secondary ide channel. Don't forget to change the jumper from slave to master.

As a quick fix, you might try to boot with the folllowing command

boot /<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1f" target="_blank">pci@1f</a>,0/<a href="mailto:pci&#64;1" target="_blank">pci@1</a>,1/<a href="mailto:ide&#64;3" target="_blank">ide@3</a>/<a href="mailto:cdrom&#64;1" target="_blank">cdrom@1</a>,0:f

Your current alias solboot points to the master on the primary channel, which is indeed your empty HD.

Hail!

Im also a newby at SUN and SPARCs.

Im with the same problem, Ive tried all the steps posted and still have no operational boot.

The only difference is that im tring to install Debian at a SPARC 5.

Ive tried a different disk too, in this case debian media 2, and ive received a error of bad magic number.

Any help will very appreciated

Hello Andr,I would recommend that you post on the Debian for SPARC maillist. Is this a SPARCstation 5 or a Ultra 5 ?The SPARCstation 5 is quite old and the (internal 4x speed) cd-drive might be unable to read your CD-R or CD-RW media.Michael
