DVD-ROM in Ultra 5

Hello all, does anyone tried to connect a IDE DVD-ROM drive to a Ultra 5 machine ? Will it work ?Thanks

Yes it will work. A DVD is seen the same as a CD-ROM. Even in the PeeCee world, the driver is the same. The only difference is the capability of the drive, which in this case, the OS doesn't care.

Hmm, is anybody watching DVDs on U5?

I have an U5/333 with PGX64. When watching DVDs the picture is not running smooth. Is this a problem of the (slow) CPU or will it be better to upgrade to a better frame buffer such as xvr-100?

Same problem with any DVD player (xine, ogle, mplayer,..)

The problem is pretty much both. The PGX line is an old chipset, I belive it's the ATI Rage. While the US IIi at the time was a great processor, it was better then the Pentium II at the same clock speed. Watching DVD's on a Pentium II is not reccomended.

I am also thinking about putting a DVD-ROM drive in my Ultra 5, since it seems a lot easier with for example the Solaris 10 DVD.

Great that this seems to be supported. One small thing I was still wondering about though, will my Ultra 5 also be able to boot properly from a Solaris 10 installation DVD when I've installed the drive?

Also can I just use any plain IDE drive?

Yes, just swap the drives and make sure the new drive is jumpered as Master.Michael

Well.....not just any IDE DVD-ROM, I have a LITE-ON SOHD-16P9SV which

works fine in a SunBlade but goes nowhere in an Ultra 5 - the system boots

as far as "the system is coming up", gives a time-out warning and throws

a major wobbly spewing details of missing file systems. On returning to

the original CD-ROM, there is nothing logged.

How about a list (even one) of models known to work, and perferably

which are cheap and readily available (like the LITE-ON....)

Hello Nigel,

who do you think should compile/provide the list ?

Sun ? Review the Sun System Handbook.

3rd-party ? Installing 3rd-party components voids the Sun warranty and invalidates the service contract. To get certified components (the seller is held liable) you have to pay much more.

It's very unlikely that EOL systems like the Ultra 1/5/10/30 are still under service contract. If they are, it's very unlikely that anyone risks to invalidate the service contract to save money.

If one model of DVD drive doesn't work, buy a different one.

I'm using Pioneer slot-in drives (ATAPI or SCSI), these have been quite expensive when I bought them years ago.

You may want to ask the fellow in this thread:

http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=msg&th= 6067&start=0&rid=1832&SQ=cb9f99820599017a8f04276 a88e818c6

He apparently has a working DVD in a U5.

Michael,

If someone has one working, a posting would be good! That's all.

There are no DVD-ROMs supported in the official Sun handbook for the

Ultra 5.

Sure, I would not recommend opening-up anything under contract.

Having bought one DVD-ROM (albeit for a SunBlade) which doesn't

work in an Ultra 5, I would like to improve the odds of the next one

working!

Hello Nigel,

I have a LITE-ON SOHD-16P9SV which works fine in a SunBlade but goes nowhere in an Ultra 5 - the system boots as far as "the system is coming up", gives a time-out warning and throws a major wobbly spewing details of missing file systems. The CD-ROM or DVD drive are attached to the second channel (as Master), there should be no impact on the first channel with the harddisk. Was the DVD drive jumpered as Master ?

From my point of view almost any DVD drive works.

(While reviewing documention for the Blade 100/150 DVD drive from Lite-On, I was very surprised that there are notes that with a certain firmware revision Solaris 10 won't boot !!!)

We are talking about systems that can take "standard" drives from a PC. This doesn't apply to systems with SCSI or slim-line drives. I don't know if SCSI DVD drives are still available.

Incidently the first DVD drives from Sun required a firmware update to boot from the Solaris DVD (back then Solaris 8).

Unfortunately my DVD drives (installed in Sun workstations)are quite old and therefore only available as used parts. With a Pioneer SCSI DVD drive there was only a single issue due to mis-configuration (the blocksize jumper was in the wrong position). With IDE CD-ROM/DVD drives the only choices are Master, Slave or Cable-Select but no blocksize/parity/termination/term-power/SCSI-ID.

I wanted to offer that I try try my Samsung DVD drive (currently installed in a PC), but even this model (TS-H352) is no longer available ...

Michael,Yes, the DVD drive was set as master (unlike cable select on theBlade). Am running Solaris 9 on Ultra 5, Solaris 10 on Blade 100.Looks like I'll have to use the CDs to upgrade - ho-hum.Thanks anyway.Nigel

If the DVD drive is in a Sun and is on the same network as the U5 you may be able to mount it as a network share.

This is what I use for a CD-ROM:

On machine with cdrom:

unshareall (if there are already shares)

(insert CD)

share -F nfs -o ro /cdrom/cdrom0 (as root - this could be put in /etc/dfs/dfstab)

/etc/rc3.d/S15nfs.server start (as root)

(if you get an error about /etc/dfs/dfstab you may need to add the line above)

showmount -e (to check nfs is running)

On machine without cdrom:

mount <IP>:/cdrom/cdrom0 /mnt (as root)

e.g. mount 142.223.10.167:/cdrom/cdrom0 /mnt

Note: you need to umount and unshareall to remove the CD.

Michael,

I got a hold of another DVD-ROM (HP GCC-4482B) and it gives exactly the

same initial warning message, which I was able to note down this time

before all hell broke loose, viz.

WARNING: timeout: reset target chno=1 targ=2

Searching SunSolve with all the words: reset target chno targ

throws up a number of reports which look somewhat relevant,

althought not specific to Ultra 5. Basically, a drive not being

seen and controllers being renumbered e.g. boot disk.

Hello Nigel,

can you please verify that the DVD drive is correctly deteced.

probe-ide

This a sample from an Ultra 10.

Is the Solaris 10 DVD created from a downloaded image or from a Sun media kit ?

Regarding the HP GCC-4482B, this is a link to the Firmware update for HLDS GCC-4482B CD-RW/DVD combo drive. Probably the drive is only re-branded and was manufactured by HLDS.

Hi Michael,

Looks o.k. to me:

There is no media present, I just swapped ROM drives and am booting

back-up in Solaris 9 still. I have Solaris 10 DVD from Sun media kit.

I have 4 Ultra 5's running in my office with Solaris 8 02/04 and openboot 3.31 and I run an Emprex dual DVD burner and in another system I have a Samsung DVD burner and in another system I have a Philips dual dvd burner. I have loaded with both DVD and cdrom and with both Solaris 8 and 10. With the Samsung DVD I have loaded solaris 2.6. I have had no problems.I bought these over the counter at PCWorld, a local outlet here in the UK. The Samsung I bought in CA somewhere, but over the counter.

Hi,After setting a Philips DVDR1660K Dual Layer DVD+RW to master (thanks for this tip), my Ultra 5 could boot perfectly from a burned DVD without any error messages.Tony

Any idea why a DVD-ROM drive in an Ultra5 that can read burned CD-rom images for Solaris 9 will reject a SUN Solaris 9 DVD install disk?
