Haven't heard this rumour yet. It also seems quite unlikely.Better check the Sun site for more info.

V890 IV+ needs Solaris10 only.I find this more weard as IV is supported on 8 with 02/04.

That's not what the www.sun.com page says....

http://www.sun.com/servers/midrange/v890/specifications.jsp

[...]

Software

Operating system

(minimum version)

* The minimum OS version for 1.5 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processors is Solaris 9 9/05 and Solaris 10 3/05 HW1

* The minimum OS version for 1.35 GHz UltraSPARC IV processors is Solaris 8 2/04, Solaris 9 4/04, and Solaris 10 3/05

Older OSs often are not able to support new hardware. Sun usually has to release hardware releases for them. I can imagine that they are not going to bother with that for Solaris 8 at this point.

... they may bother depending on which software Sun's big customers are running... nevermind Solaris 10, I know of a couple major FMS apps that are yet to be certified by their developers as fully compatible with Solaris 9, like MIcromuse's Netcool, for example. It would be dumb of Sun to prevent hardware sales by not allowing customers to use older versions of the O.S. in new hardware.

It is not that these applications won't work with Solaris 9 or 10 , it is that IT shops in major corporations will not move to either new software or hardware unless they have an assurance/guarantee that their current applications will work with the new sw or hw, in the form of 100% app, sw, and hd support and maintenance from the vendors. If IT shops cannot get such assurance/guarantee, they would be reluctant to buy new hardware, even go as far as moving to linux or even Windows.

Well, that's true for any new version of Solaris. But Sun always has to cut them off at some point. The costs go up the farther back you try to support. Leaving Solaris 2.6 behind was traumatic for many, and I'm sure there's quite a bit of old hardware out there in production just for that OS.

However I don't see that a last ship date has appeared for Solaris 8 yet. I don't know if it has been announced EOL. I couldn't find a reference.

Let me correct myself. If I have Solaris 8 then only option for V890 is to go to Solaris10.The only problem I see is V890 ultrasparc IV is supported on 8 and IV+ is 9 or 10.I think SUN should supoort it on Solaris 8 till it is EOL'd.
