Hello Joshua,

this is Solaris 2.5.1 installed.

The most common procedure to diagnose the problem is to boot into single-user mode (boot -s), but this requires knowledge of the root password (on disk).

Just get an inexpensive SCSI CD-ROM drive and connect it with the systems case open. There are SS5 with a slim floppy drive that a allow the installation of a normal height CD drive, but most SS5 use the case that requires the use of a slime-line CD-ROM (these are very expensive and only 4x speed). Jumper the CD drive to ID 6.

Download Solaris 9 Software 1 of 2 (the second CD is also required for installation). Solaris 9 requires at least 96 MB, so I would recommend to buy another 32 MB RAM (1 module).

Use the first the CD to boot into single-user mode (boot cdrom -s) and mount the root filesystem (of the disk). Remove the password from the root entry in /etc/shadow. Dismount the root filesystem and reboot from disk into single-user mode.

Probably the system "hangs" because it tries to mount (non existent) remote filesystems.

If you look for an inexpensive book on Solaris 9 have a look at http://www.teachmesun.com/ . This link was given on Solaris-x86.org.
