name server/internet connection problem

i am having trouble connecting to the internet using netscape. I have set my http and ftp proxy to the correct IP addresses and know the IP address of my name server but i get 2 errors whenever i open netscape.

1st error: unable to locate server

2nd error: There is a name server problem. If your site must use a non-root name server you will need to set the $SOCKS_NS enviroment to point at the approiate name server.

Any ideas where i should start?

Thanks

not clear in your post, but you've set your nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf and set nsswitch to resolv names via dns in /etc/nsswitch.conf?

also, if you make these changes, it may not magically start working if you are running the name server cache daemon, nscd. hup or kill, u don't need it anyways.
