Single User Mode

I log into a remote 2.6 box run either init S, init s, or reboot -- -s to boot into single user mode. However, the system reboots and continues to boot to system run level 3....i.e. i can log back onto the box. Any one got any ideas why? I need to back the box up and need root unmounted.

You said "remote 2.6 box" - how are you going to drop a machine to single user mode, log into it REMOTELY, and expect the root file system to be unmounted (which will never happen anyway assuming the box has been booted up no matter what the init state) ?

I do of course know this. I have a person who can log on the box locally and run my script!!
