Delay executing commands on SunBlade 100

When I enter a command on my SunBlade 100 (Solaris 8, 512 meg RAM) after a period of inactivity (about 20 minutes), there is a delay of about 7 seconds while it spins up either the disk drive or the CDROM drive. This is very irritating. Is there a configuration setting that can eliminate this behavior? If so, what are the cons, if any, of doing it?
