Solaris Management Console toolbox could not be loaded
Hello,
when I start SMC I get this error, toolbox <a href="http://ultra:989/toolboxes/smc.tbx" target="_blank">http://ultra:989/toolboxes/smc.tbx</a> could not be loaded. I only noticed this yesterday, and I think it is related to some patch that was applied recently. When I did wget <a href="http://ultra:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx" target="_blank">http://ultra:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx</a> I got these headers
HTTP/1.0 200 OK

Server: Tomcat/2.1
Content-Type: text/plain
Servlet-Engine: Tomcat/2.1 (Java 1.4.0_01; SunOS 5.9 sparc; java.vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.)

and wget complains of
Last-modified header invalid -- time-stamp ignored.
perhaps it is this header that's invalidating the download and so SMC complains?
This is solaris 9 on an ultra 5, fully patched (up to yesterday).
Thanks for your help!

I get this same sort of problem, and I did nothing to my machine except install the recommended updates from the update manager. This seems to have broken the SMC.
Immediately after rebooting I can run the SMC and it tells me that there is no Solaris Management Console Server running. I don't know why its not by default started at bootup anymore?
Anyways, I run:
prompt> /etc/init.d/init.wbem status
Solaris Management Console server not running on port 898.
So I run:
prompt> /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
prompt> /etc/init.d/init.wbem status
Solaris Management Console server version 2.1.0 running on port 898.
Then, starting SMC, I get the error that the toolbox could not be loaded:
Toolbox: http://myhostname:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx could not be loaded.
Then, when I click on the menu to "Open Toolbox" to go try to manually find that toolbox and load it, I get the error that "No Solaris Management Console server was available on the specified server."
I just verified that there it was running, why is it not available?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running Solaris 10 on SUNBlade 150.

Did you guys figure this out? I have the same problem, after patching, my smc gui no longer works with the same errors you received. Thanks!

Hi all,
the same problem here (since some days). Can anyone tell me something about the causes or have anyone suggestions to find a solution?
showrev tells:
Release: 5.10
Kernel architecture: i86pc
Application architecture: i386
Hardware provider:
Domain:
Kernel version: SunOS 5.10 Generic_118855-19
All Patches are installed.
Could it be possible that's the problem with "useradd" got the same reason? The message I get is:
"# useradd -m oneuser
UX: useradd: ERROR: Unable to create the home directory: Operation not applicable."
Regards and TIA

Hi all,
the first problem is solved - all patches are uninstalled, smc is ok again and the little icon for the update-anager appears in the panel - it was not there the last time.
But I'm not satisfied - it's a dirty solution and I want to know which patch causes the problems.
Any suggestions?
The second problem seems to be a probleme of the rights for the home-directory. May be I misconfigured this by "learning by doing"

Patch # 121309-08 breaks SMC on a clean install of Solaris 10 6/06 on a Sun Ultra 20 ws. Not sure the hows and whys, but using 127.0.0.1 and localhost will still attach to the server, but that is all. Nothing else inside the toolbox functions.
If anyone knows why, I would love to find out.

Removed patch #121308-08, which was a SMC update, with no effect. Found missing entry in /etc/services file that defines the smc service and port number.
Added:
smc 898/tcp # System Management Consol
and it all sprang back to life....

I seem to have come across the same issue as well. On an Ultra 2, I'm running Solaris 10 1/06 (after an upgrade from Solaris 10 5/05). SMC 2.1 was working fine before I applied the latest Recommended Solaris 10 patch cluster. Now when starting smc, I get the message,
"Server Not Running
No Solaris Management Console server was available on the specified server. Please ensure there is a Solaris Management Console server available on the specified host and that it is running."
with stop signs for all the management tools. I do not have patch 121309 installed which I suspect applies to the 6/06 release. In comparison to a working system, neither workstation had the entry for "smc 898/tcp" in its /etc/services file. I added it but did not make a difference so I removed the entry.
"/etc/init.d/init.wbem stop/start" did not do the trick. Using dananderson's advice in,
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5057915
I ended up having to completely remove and re-add all packages that had to do with smc using the Solaris 1/06 installation CD set. I confirmed smc was working again without the error. Update Manager suggested I add patches 121308-08 and 124188-02. Hesitantly, I added those two patches, rebooted and confirmed smc produced the error message again. I removed patches 121308-08 and 124188-02 and smc started working again. I will have to refrain from applying those patches so it continues to run.
I wish I had further explanation as to why those updates are killing my smc.

Mike - Thanks for this post, it helped me out.
Thought I'd also share some additional information.
I'm running Solaris 10 6/06.
I had just installed the newest recommended and security patches yesterday, Feb 07 2007. After reading this post I removed patches 121308-08 and 124188-02. On a couple of my machines the removal of patch 124188-02 also required removing patch 119315-07. After removing the patches my SMC gave a message similar to unable to download usermgr client. I didn't write down the exact error and have since restarted SMC. Anyway's after checking the release notes on 119315-07, I noticed one of the files listed was a UserMgrClt.jar file. So I downloaded 124188-01 and 119315-07 and installed them. It's working again.

Simply removing 121308-08 and 124188-02 resolved our issue also.Anyone know what the issue here is and if it's been resolved yet? Thanks for the posts - saved me lots of time :)Tony
