SunFire V210 DVD install

Someone please help, I unboxed a new V210 with Solaris 9 and no DVD or graphics card, which I am trying to install. Before I can install the graphics card drivers, I need to get the DVD drive recognized. Thanks, Bruce

What is the part number of the DVD drive and Graphics card you are using? Many of the systems Sun sells without DVD drive installed have the operating system pre installed and you just have to confingure the OS at firstboot. You can also install Solaris over a network very easily, but you will need to attach a terminal to the serial port to configure the system either way.

Part number for graphics card is 605-4659-02. DVD part number 1977067C-93. The server has been started and I went through the ALOM configuration and I am at the root system prompt. Solaris is pre-installed and all I need to do is get the DVD drive operating. I am connected through the serial management port. The [mount -F hsfs -O -o ro /dev/dsk/c0t06d0s0 /cdrom] command suggested by the installation docs did not work.

Thanks for responding.

Are these Sun parts you are using? The Sun supported graphics cards part numbers for the V210/240 begin with 370-xxxx and 375-xxxx, any other card will not work. Also the only supported DVD drive for the V210/240 is 370-5128 ( Panasonic SR-8177 ). All these Sun OEM parts have firmware that has been designed to allow the parts to be used with Sun Openboot and Solaris off the shelf PC parts will not work.

Martin,

That 605-series numbering syntax would probably be a top level number

(cardboard box, pamphlet, hardware, antistatic bag, etc) for the option.

The other number is probably just something else from the drive's various labels.

Bruce,

Just to clear up a tiny bit of confusion...

You have installed the optical drive to the chassis? (yes/no)

LED's flicker at some point, during bootup ?

Did you do a reconfiguration reboot after installing it ?

That would be necessary to incorporate the drive as a device in the path-to-inst file.

A quick check, at the OS level would be to do...

# iostat -En

A valid DVD drive would be noted in the output from that command.

You would be able to find it by brand and model.

And... generally speaking, the filesystem of a disk would automount.
