Split topic: Where did all my older postings go ?

Martin, et al

regarding the posting count.

I haven't a clue !

It appears that the admins of the software engine underlying the forums have tweaked something again.

Considering the history on that topic, we shouldn't be all that surprised.

<u>Everyone</u> that had a large number of postings is re-numbered.

Sorry, nothing I can do about it. I just moderate.

Thanks for the info Bill, I looked at some of the other regular users post counts and it doesn't look like I'm the only one that's been relegated! It looks suspiciously like " running out of storage ", so all data from a certain date has been removed. Didn't you say that it is a third party hosting these forums? Bad reflection on the services this lot are providing to Sun.

It's not just the post-count that's been reduced.

It appears they've archived everything that is older than six months.

... all discussion threads, as well.

Every forum -->> Hardware, OS, Networking, Security, JES, JDS ...

I don't see anything older than late Sept '05.

The Cobalt forum has always been on a different system. It wasn't effected by this action--this time.

Well, so be it.We get to impress everyone all over again with our knowledge (which <i>could</i> have been found with a forum search).

The sad thing I feel here is that this has reduced the amount of rich content previously contributed by many smart people that may not have the time to contribute these days. It's a shame that we weren't consulted on this, I for one would have preferred to see only the rubbish deleted first - how many threads were started on the same topic? Or how many threads were posted off topic?

Perhaps now we should take this opportunity to create and revise a set of detailed sticky threads at the beginning of all sections of the forum, perhaps this will help filter out useless material for the future. I would be prepared to contribute time to developing such content, but of course, there would have to be some thought and planning put into what information to provide ( ideas from yourself and Michael are very welcome ). Some ideas that come to my mind are; simple 2 disk volume manager configuration, steps to take when adding new peripherals, recommended patch or firmware links for all releases of Solaris and the usual links to Sun solve and docs.sun.com. Let me know what you think?

Martin, et al.

It appears that we may not need the sticky postings, after all.

The following notice has been placed at the "front door"

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;supportforum.sun.com/" target="_blank">http://supportforum.sun.com/</a>

of all these forums (fora ? )

I quote, including typos ...

<font face="arial"><font color="darkblue"><font size="4">"NOTICE to Support Forum Users: Changes Comming Soon!

This forum site will be integrated with the forum.sun.com site in the near future.

At that time you will be re-directed to those forums to continue your hardware and software support discussions.

The forum.sun.com site uses a MySun registration.

If you do not currently have a MySun id you will need to register before engaging in forums.

We hope you will continue to be an active participant in the Sun Forums. "</font></font></font>

It appears the discussions will be merged with the SDN discussions.

Well, it was fun to be able to delete the spam while I could ...

This may also mean that a few of the more active contributors are going to be excluded permanently, if they cannot create a MySun login profile.

Does this mean that our current profile and history will be removed and a new profile created from our MySun account?

I just do not know.

When I read the forum notice, I interpreted it as saying:

'go make a MySun profile and check it by logging in to the SDN forums,

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;forum.sun.com/index.jspa" target="_blank">http://forum.sun.com/index.jspa</a>

otherwise you're out of luck.'

Granted, the MySun profile isn't necessarily a Spectrum login.

It's used for the free downloads, for example.

My profile, over there, results in a completely different username,

and I'm just an ordinary end-user in that part of Sun's web presence.

Bill if the hardware forum starts up on forum.sun.com I'd still like to put together some detailed sticky threads. What is you handle for MySun? Mine is the same as this, m-lennon. I created the profile after I created the profile here.

Harold MySun is free - $0.00

Martin,

If they migrate this residual database of discussions to the SDN forums, there won't be any sticky threads.

It will run on their forum engine and have their software quirks.

There aren't any "stickies" at <a href="http://forum.sun.com/index.jspa" target="_blank">http://forum.sun.com/index.jspa</a>

Just gather your thoughts and create your posts.

If it is before the changes, post the information then immediately reply to it with a second entry requesting it be made sticky.

I'll edit it appropriately.

(I'll delete the reply and pin the post to the forum.)

Martin:

Don't bother trying to prepare new sticky posts.

ALL the previous ones in the Workstation forum are gone.

... it's likely that their original creation dates flagged them for deletion when the other three years' of posts were removed.
