X2100 LAN Problem

Hi all,

Recently bought 2 X2100 machines. After when trying to install solaris 10 (03/05) the install process asks for the server name but not the IP address etc.?

After Solaris has installed the server has no LAN cards

even ifconfig nge0 plumb

does not work and ifconfig -a shows only the loopback

Both server are the same and I really cannot see both being faulty.

Can any one help?

Just a thought - during the Solaris installation there is a configuration option for system networking YES or NO, by any chance have you selected no?

Thanks for the update, however I think I have found the problem. Seems that after loading Solaris in the normal way without anu networking you need to download additional software from Sun X2100 Networking and Sound drivers.

All appears to be working now. Thanks

Sun looking more like a PC every day!!!!

Well, while we are talking about the x2100s, I found that the system will only network boot using the rightmost ethernet port. The leftmost port does not support the network boot for some reason. I've tried it on numerous x2100s with the same result.

RedHat enterprise linux v3, update 6 boots and runs great on these systems. And I found the performance to be about 7% better than my v20z with the equivalent 2.2GHz Opterons (model 175 x2100s vs. the model 248 v20zs).

We support some iptables ( RHL based ) firewalls and VPN on PC servers ( oldish IBM netfinity's ) and I was thinking the X2100 will be a great machine for this application, but it's limited expansion bus means we can't meet the minimum of 8 network interfaces on each host that is requested by the customer. It's interesting to hear about the performance difference between the V20z and X2100, was the V20z using slower memory ( PC2700 )? And have you compared the V20z to the X4100?

As a reply to your question, see a new topic I just created "<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t= msg&amp;th=6049" target="_blank"><u>v20z vs. x2100</u></a>".

I haven't used the x4100, as I use dual CPU systems almost exclusively, and the 4100 doesn't fit my needs or budget.
