v20z BIOS update fails
Hi,
I'm having trouble updating the BIOS on a v20z. The update procedure
fails with timeout:
% platform set os state update-bios \
/mnt/sw_images/platform/firmware/bios/V1.34.4.2/bios.sp
This command may take several minutes. Please be patient.
Bios started
Error. The operation timed out.
Some Sun manual states that one should simply repeat the procedure,
but I tried several dozen times already without success.
On other nodes it usually also took 2-3 attempts but it finally wrote
the BIOS image successfully.
Does anyone have experience with this BIOS version or knows some general tricks to avoid timeouts ?
Also, are there any known hardware<->firmware incompatibilities ? I haven't seen any.
Regards,
Norbert

Yes. They came up with the idea to replace the chassis and main board.
This will definitely provide a new flash rom for the BIOS on this machine, but does not explain the timeouts I got on other boards.
BTW: There is a jumper on the main board that write-protects the BIOS. I checked it and it was in the default position (closed : BIOS writable).

Martin is referring to one of the editions of the Sun System Handbook,
which is often referred to as the SSH.
There is a version that is freely available to anyone,
with a Service Contract or without a contract.
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/
That resource has information that can be thought of
as being placed into the public domain
Sun's service contracts have different designations,
depending on their scope of service privileges.
"Large Scale Data Center"
"Platinum"
"Gold"
"Silver"
"Bronze"
(... and there are also a few minor sub-sets of each; for example "Software Only")
Since their contract names have different colors, their generic and inclusive classification is as SPECTRUM contracts.
Anyone with a service contract will have deeper access
to Sun's intellectual property because you have paid for that privilege,
so there is a more inclusive version of the SSH.
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/
Thus the Spectrum SSH is the one that you access only with a contract login account.
Lastly, there is a version of the SSH that is only available to Sun-internal staff.
