Support for older Solaris?
Hello,
Looking at the specs for the newer Sun boxes coming out, they all say that the minimum supported OS is Solaris 10.
Is it Sun's intent to discontinue the ability to run older versions (8/9) on the newer hardware?
thx!

Hello David,
<i>Is it Sun's intent to discontinue the ability to run older versions (8/9) on the newer hardware?</i>
No, these systems (platforms) did never support the outdated versions. You can't discontinue something that wasn't there.
It's true that there have been Solaris 8 PSRs (PSR1 12/02, PSR2 5/03, PSR3 7/03, PSR4 2/04) in parallel to Solaris 9 (FCS 5/02).
Just forgot to mention, these forums are only <b>user-to-user</b>.

Some of the newer Sun systems like the x64 X4100 for example have an entirely new architecture than that which the earlier versions of Solaris was developed for, If you use this link you can see the supported versions of Solaris for that system:
<a href="http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireX4100/SunFireX4100.ht ml" target="_blank"> http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireX4100/Su nFireX4100.html</a>
The same can be said for the T1 powered systems eg. the T2000 only supports Solaris 10 at this time:
<a href="http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireT2000/SunFireT2000.ht ml" target="_blank"> http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireT2000/Su nFireT2000.html</a>
Some of the more traditional SPARC based systems that have been under continuous development eg. the SF E2900 continue to support earlier versions of Solaris:

Can I ask what systems you are interested in?
