W2100Z, RHEL4 Cannot Read DVD w/Internal Drive

We have 5 Sun W2100Z dual opteron systems that have internal Aopen COM5232/AAH cdrom/writer/DVD drives. They all run RHEL 4. We are most of the time unable to read DVDs using these drives on any of the systems.

The problem seems OS-related because we can boot from a DVD.

When we put in a dvd we get a msg: Unable to mount the selected volume. The volume is probably in a format that cannot be mounted.

mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc, or too many mounted file systems.

I seem to recall that on one system I saw that the dvd was finally mounted after a few minutes to a few hours.

I put the same dvd into my laptop running 32 bit RHEL 4 and it reads the dvd no problem.

Various users have tried mounting different DVDs on their systems and have all had the same problem, so I do not think that it is a defect in an individual drive or defective dvd.

We have no trouble reading or burning CDs on these drives.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Problem solved. I updated the Aopen DVD drive firmware and that cured the problem. The firmware updater only runs under WIndows so I had to pull the drives out of my systems and connect them to a Windows pc to update them.
