E6900 - Infrastructure

I'm trying to figure out what tile cut-out size to use in my data center for these servers. Is the whole bottom open?

Andrew,

The forum moderator has this sticky post in the Workgroup Servers forum:

If you have questions on Sunfire Systems

Please consider going back to Sun directly. They'll be expecting to be performing the installation and will have already done it so often that they'll be well versed in what's necessary for site preparation.

The installation of an E6900 is so very much more than just wrestling the system into a rack.

Is this question about the amount of floor tile to remove when the server is being installed? Is the whole bottom open do you mean: Is the bottom of the Sun Fire rack open for cables etc? Not sure if I understand what you are asking! There used to be an environmental document available for the Sun Fire E4800 etc. but even with that document available, Sun would supply a site specification guide prior to the server being installed. Contact Sun.

the e6900 have the whole thing packed till to the bottom of the rack. this means center cut-out tiles are no good. e6900 have 2 rts in front and 2 in rear. so a center-side cut-out tile behind the rack will be a better option.

E6900 / 4900 Site Planning Guide is located:

http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Server s/Midrange_Servers/Sun_Fire_e69-e49/Hardware/index.html

Martin, didn't Sun use to perform a pre-installation site audit to ensure facility would not present any problems with installation or long term operation of these servers? Maybe bmacdo would be the correct source. (I just know bill is gonna kill me.)

John,

thanks for that link.

Yes, Sun is supposed to do a site planning visit, unless the customer decides they don't want to spend the money for a Sun-Install. (even for systems such as the E6900, where installation is included when they buy the system.)

Every time I'd been brought in on that sort of issue, it's after-the-fact and everything is messed up.

I'm sure that is why rukbat responded as they did ...

... go back to Sun and have them do everything; it will be done correctly:

physical positioning, electrical, HVAC, OS install, Diag POSTs, first Explorer, SunCheckup, and more, and more, and more.

John, I was making an assumption here - I assume that when a customer orders a Midrange or High end system from Sun, the Sun team responsible for the project would set out a site guide or protocol for the data center that will take the system.

For entry level or EOL midrange systems that I am involved with, I have implemented a check list for my customers that summarizes site specifications recommended for the Sun hardware in question eg. suggested route for network cables or 32A leads to PS. All these customers perform the installations in-house, many have highly skilled engineers and are not always willing to pay the extra charges for Sun Services.
