v440 Froze up
Pardon the explanation here, but I'm a bit of a novice.
I had a v440 freeze up the other day without explanation. We are running Solaris 8, fully patched. Here were the symptoms:
We received an email notifying us that an external process onitor was unable to make a connection to the server, so I began to investigate.
I already had an ssh conenction open to the box, and that connection did not disconnect.
I then tried to issue a few commands to see if all the processes were still running, which they appeared to be. However, after I issued about 10 commands (simple commands like ps-eaf and df -k), I could no longer get anything to show up on my ssh client. Nothing I typed would show up at all - it was as if the system just froze up.
I then logged into our console server (the v440 is off-site) and was able to console to the system and issue several other commands, but after about a minute, my console connection froze as well. Same symptoms as above.
I then tested the application we had running on that system, but it was functioning just fine. All processes seemed to work fine, I just couldn't do anything once I connected to the system via ssh or the console.
The system remained in this same state for about an hour. Eventually, we decided to hard boot it, as we couldn't let it live on in this disabled state. The system came back up a few minutes later without issue.
Once back up, I checked messages, but there was no information in there that would tell me what was going on.
Any suggestions on what might have happened here?
Thanks!
