x2100 spud bracket and drive compatibility

Hi support,

I'm considering an x2100 for a staging site, and would like to know if my numerous, unused spud brackets from an old e250 will fit. Also, can I just pop in any Sata I/II drive? For example, the 400GB Western Digital 4000YR (400GB)?

Regards,

Mike

When this system first came out I had a customer contact me that wanted to use a WD 73GB 10k RPM SATA drive and a spud from an old system. Being unfamiliar with the system I contacted my distributor and asked if this was possible without impacting the system warranty, the answer was no. Now the solution that we are looking at is booting the server from a SAN by using an PCI-Express HBA. Emulex have a number of PCIe cards, LPe11000 for example. Contact Sun prior to using any unsupported drives in the system.

... and Mike,

This forum is not Sun techsupport, but simply a forum whereby end-users can discuss their issues.

Additionally, the x86-based hardware isn't particulary supported in any forum.

Sun happens to host over 100 individual forums, which I believe to be more than any other major vendor. But it simply hosts them.

In addition to the forums, there are other information and documentation resources, again what I believe to be greater than any other vendor.

It may be overwhelming, but remember that it is available, not hidden.

We jsut got a X2100 in and it appears that

1) The traditional Sun "Spud" bracket is what is used

2) Any SATA drive will be accomodated by this bracket and fit into the X2100.

So yeah, it looks like generic parts will work. Plus the no-drive X2100 ships with the spud brackets, you just need to remove the screws that hold the spacer plate on and mount your drive to the bracket.

As noted by Martin, above, the use of sort of non-Sun components in your system will suspend and void any warranty and/or service contract coverage, so long as that item is in the system.

Thanks Bill, this is why I mentioned the HBA, as far as external peripherals or PCIe cards are concerned you should not impact the warranty in any way. Sun are begining to offer some Emulex HBA options and perhaps there will be an Emulex option offered for the galaxy range in the future. This is an expensive alternitive to SATA, but for our customers application servers it is very inportant to have high performace I/O and network with single CPU.

NOTE For anyone considering using non Sun SATA drives in their Ultra 20 or X2100, please contact Sun or your reseller prior to doing so, ask for the warranty status or if the product is certified to be used in the system.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, the warranty issue aside, is there any reason why 2 * 400Gb WD drives would not work in this machine? Have you give it a go Mike? Thanks and have a good week end.

Please don't post any unsupported disk configurations on this forum at this time, I don't think that it would be acceptable on new systems ( at least that is my opinion ), perhaps Bill could make a suggestion here. The simple answer to your question is that the system is a PC server with an SATA controller, so it should support any SATA disk. In most of Sun's product lifecycle, 3rd party components are certified for use ( mainly HBAs and and other I/O components ), I can't see it being any different for the X2100 or Ultra 20 systems. I have a lot of interest from small FreeBSD and Linux shops that are interested in using the A75-LYB1-N-512-AL8 for use as a firewall or networking services, I have asked these people to contact Sun. But if more customers request this from Sun, perhaps the certified 3rd party products will become available quicker. It would be pointless to void your warranty for the sake of a few GB of disk space. I will contact Sun about this on Monday and post back here about status of any upcomming supported/certified off the shelf components.
