W2100z/W1100Z new issue w/chassis fan

Last month I posted several messages regarding a "rear chassis fan fault" issue I was having with these systems. After numerous warranty tickets w/Sun they sent us a boatload of fans and we upgraded to the latest bios for download. Now the same machines are having a new fan "crisis" - the fan chugs - up - down - up - down. Constantly. Also, when you ping the system - it is totally unstable (see attached txt file) and the keyboard works sometimes. No error(s) in the DMI event log this time.

Has anyone seen this same issue? If so, any fix?

What operating system are you running?

We are running a 64bit rhel 3.4 & rhel 4 OS.

I had another system bite the dust this am - with

same error. I keep throwing fans at them - but

obviously that is not going to last. sigh.... <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_sad.gif" border=0 alt="Sad">

I think you should take the issue up with Sun, I could throw out some suggestions based on information available in the Sun system handbook, but you've probably tried all of them by now! The main problem with the fans is the BIOS and there have been a few revisions since the system came out.

I just heard back from our Sun Rep - I thought it was worth noting to the forum:

"the information from the product engineers is that the "pulsing" issue is related to the 2.1 BIOS. The fix (work around) in place for other customers is to down rev to the 2.0 Supplemental BIOS. The other option is to move to the test BIOS which will become the 2.2 Supplemental BIOS release soon. "

I checked earlier and this new release is not out yet. Just FYI for anyone else with this chassis fan "pulsing".

I had an issue with the CPU fans 'pulsing'. It would do it in the BIOS as well as the OS. The system to grind to a virtual standstill in tIt would cause he OS (rhel 4.1). Swapping out the motherboards fixed the problem.

I encountered in this problem today. Do you solve it or not? It seems that we cannot depend on the updated BIOS from SUN. Thanks, Neo

IMHO ...

This issue has has been discussed a bit too much in the forum.

Keep in mind that the hardware forums are a user-to-user discussion, not actual techsupport from Sun.

It seems that the only way anyone got a resolution was to open a service case with Sun, directly.(Go back to the manufacturer.)

Various workarounds do not seem to fix anything.

That's what Ronnie did.

If the systems are in warranty or have service contract coverage, that's what you should consider first.

If there is no service coverage, then expect to pay for service, else accept whatever results the workarounds may or may not give.

According to a posting on the SolarisX86 yahoo group

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message/ 30661" target="_blank"><b>Re: w2100z Fan problem...more info</b></a>

there has been an FCO (Field Change Order) issued in the middle of October, that instructs to replace all 3 fans in the w2100z (<u>only</u> those w2100z manufactured in the 11th week of 2005).

I don't have access to the FCO ...

Here's my understanding of how a FCO works.

Perhaps Stumoor can confirm this.

The customer opens a service case with Sun for the issue, and requests the action be done as per the details in the FCO document.

Sun arranges for a Sun Field Engineer to perform the service at the customer's premises.

If there is a service contract in place, or if there is a warranty that includes F.E. privileges, and not every system's warranty includes it, then there is no cost to the customer.

If there is no F.E. coverage on the system, then the customer pays standard flat-rate labor rates for the service, but the cost of parts are covered by the FCO.That would include such circumstances as when a system is out of warranty.

All FCO services must be done by a Sun F.E. -- you cannot just get the parts shipped to the customer, with some unenforceable promise to send the old parts back to Sun.Sun needs the removed parts for QA analysis and any possible recourse to the OEM of the part.

FCO's do not exist forever. They eventually expire.

The warranty on the W210z <i>does</i> include FE service, Mon-Fri, daytime.

Yup, that sounds right to me.
