samfs used for O/S backup and recovery

I'm looking for a method (Blueprint) to backup the O/S filesystems of the samfs Server and the T3 Service Processor. Is there a method of "dump"ing the O/S filesystems to the samfs volume and then freezing the backup image on a tape? The tape would need to be sent off-site and returned for recovery. Would the tape be useable without samfs (i.e. read by gnutar)?

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure what your asking but try looking at the samfsdump man pages I think this is the utitlity you are probably looking for.

Yes, samfsdump is the tool to use for the samfs filesystem data. However, I need to back up the operating system files from / (root), /usr, /opt, /var. This is easy enough to cpio the filesystems into a big file in the SAMFS, but all of the local tape drives are reserved to SAMFS soooo... how do I save the O/S files to tape in a manner that they may be restored onto different hardware BEFORE SAMFS is installed and running? I understand that I could read the SAMFS tapes using gnuTar; but how do I rotate the tapes out/in of the library properly so that SAMFS does not miss them and recognizes them?

This is a stand-alone system with no other external hardware around to save the O/S files to. Currently there is no D/R nor frequent backup plans!

If you are going to use the tape for system recovery , surely all you have to do is drop a drive out of SAM-FS and use that for a 'standard' method of dumping the O/S disk ? - ie ufsdump the system to tape.

On several sites where I have used SAM-FS , where clients want two copies of each tape , I take two drives out of SAM-FS control (tlaking about a robot here , but makes no difference with standalone drives), and do a bit to bit copy of the tape.

If I have a problem with an 'original' tape , I just pull it out and replace it with it's direct functional equivalent.

Once the copy has been done , the copy tape gets identical external barcode , only a different background colour ...

cheers

Is there a way to have Netbackup & SAM-FS share an L180 library so that some of the library slots and drives are controlled by Netbackup and the remainder controlled by SAM-FS? This will allow me to automate non-SAM-FS file backups and not have to purchase another tape library.

If you have an alternative suggestion for accomplishing the same task, please share your suggestion.

Thanks

You can use ACSLS (StorageTek's Product), if you need to share a Tape library for multiple systems.
