A1000 - bad controller?

I have attempted to attach an A1000 (bought used) to an Ultra 10 (Solaris 2.7 w/ all 7_Recommended patches, RM 6.1.1U2 with patch 106552-04.) I am using a Sun Differential Ultra SCSI card with a Sun VHDC to HD68 cable and a Sun Terminator.

After a boot -r, the /dev/rdsk/ symbolic links are not built so RM6 and all included utilities can not find a controller. I've tried drvconfig and hot_add with no success.

Using >probe-scsi-all at OBP, I can see the RAID controller at the target SCSI id with 8 unconfigured LUNS.

My thought is that I have a bad controller as I've also tried resetting the array (removed battery for 1 minute, reboot with 1 drive in 2,0).

Would I still see the RAID controller at OBP if the controller was bad? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

What, exactly, does probe-scsi-all say for your controller. My thinking is that you may have a higher version of RDAC firmware on your controller than your version of RM 6 allows so "confusion" ensues and the paths are not able to be built. probe-scsi-all should show you a 3 digit number that you can compare to the RDAC Firmware in the 2nd table listed in InfoDoc 43483. I think, don't quote me here, that 201 would indicate RM 6.1.1 while 305 would indicate RM6.22 or higher. http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doc=finfodoc%2F43483&zone_32=43 483

I'm having the same type of issue.

Upon doing a probe-scsi-all, I can see :

Target 6

Unit 0 DiskSymbios StorEDGE A1000 0205

Unit 1 Device type 20 Symbios StorEDGE A1000 0205

Unit 2

Unit 3

... through Unit 7

However, when I get to the console, can't see the RAID controller via ./lad or the X interface RM6.

I am running Solaris 2.6, latest patches and have installed RM6.22

Do I need to downgrade or replace RM6.22 with something older based on the 0205 firmware rev?

Please see the FIRMWARE NOTES located at: http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Devices/SCSI/SCSI_A1000_Raid_Ctlr.html

There are 2 different part numbers for each controller based on the firmware installed which in turn, dictates which version of Raid Manager you "should" be running. Looking at the previous link to the Firmware matrix looks like you should be probably be running RM6.1.1 u1/u2 for Solaris 2.6. I don't know if it is possible to upgrade the firmware to 3.01. which is what Solaris 2.6 is looking for with RM 6.22. If it's possible then at a minimum, you will have changed the part # for your controller and this will present support problems in the future.

Almost forgot. Are you sure this is Target 6? Normal targets are 4 or 5. You may want to rotate your SCSI ID switch back a notch or 2 to keep it less confusing.

It was previously on 5, but I couldnt see it at all - so move it to SCSI ID 6 and now it's visible via probe-scsi-all and format, but not via RAID Manager.

Puzzled about what I need to do next. Do I try to remove RM 6.2.2 and install RM 6.1.1 or try to upgrade the firmware on the A1000? If so, how do I identify the firware. The 205 doesnt appear to be a firmware rev.

Any additional insight appreciated.

I have a similar problem, but I may not be as knowledgable as yo9u guys since I can't run probe. How do you run the probe? "man probe" seems to indicate an API, not a utility.

I have a A1000 and Solaris 8 E450R. I have plugged the A1000 into SCSI port on the back, and

all ports on the A1000 are terminated correctly.

I have installed the flash prom update and the rm6221 software. The software runs, but it complains

that no RAID modules are found. I'm not seeing any documentation that tells me how to create a RAID

module so that Raid Manager can configure it. We don't have a RAID card. This is just a development system. We intend to run software RAID.

Any hints will be appreeciated. Thanks. - Jesse

The probe-scsi-all command mentioned earlier is run from the OBP ok prompt. If you have attached your A1000 to the onboard SCSI port of your 420R or E450 (no E450R) then it will not work. You need a High Voltage Differential (HVD) SCSI HBA to control the A1000 and a Differential terminator on the unused port on the A1000. You will need to get a 375-0006 HBA. See: http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/A1000/components.html
