Qlogic HBA talking to an HP XP512 SAN
Hi,
This question is basically a revisit of a problem I posted a couple of months ago, and let fall by the wayside.
We have a Sun Fire V880 (Solaris 8 0202) trying to connect to an HP XP512 using two Sun-branded FC-AL Fiber network cards (p/n X6799A). The cards are PCI Qlogic QLA2200F single-port fibre cards. The connections go through a Brocade Silkworm 2800 switch. The Brocade switch sees the cards, recognizes the WWN on each.
Question: Is the regular Sun driver /kernel/drv/qlc sufficient to support these cards? Or do we have to use the Qlogic -supplied driver /kernel/drv/qla2200? Any other packages have to be installed? We have the correct settings in the XP512 - verified by the HP engineer.
We've modified /kernel/drv/sd.conf so that all LUN/Target combinations are covered, and performed the appropriate reconfiguration reboots when needed.
Nothing appears to work. The cards are recognized when the system boots, but don't appear to get attached to the driver. Our Sun engineer states that this configuration work fine when talking to a Hitachi 9960 box at a couple of customers sites. This, apparently, is the same box as the XP512, with different microcode.
Any ideas? I've been pulling my hair out for a long time with this issue... It's tricky trying to balance what engineers from both sides say - the HP engineers has been quite helpful with suggestions, but I think I've hit a brick wall at this point.
Thanks
Scotty

HP requires that you use their adapter and their driver. They are really just an HP branded QLA and a specific revision of the driver by HP to talk to HP's microcode. It is hit or miss to use non manufacturer-supplied cards/drivers, but it can be done.
Also, you state that you are using FC-AL cards. Are you using AL (Aribtrrated Loop) or Switched Fabric? With AL, you will have to run QuickLoop on the Brocades, but you should really be in a Switched Fabric.
If the Brocade switch sees the WWN's of the cards, then the driver is binding to the card (that is how the WWN is broadcast.) Check to make sure you have made a zone for the cards to the HP, and that you haven't disabled ports/WWN's through a default zone.
You may have done this, but check the qla conf file in /kernel/drv, and make sure you have all of the settings correct (they are named after the adapter label, so they differ.) I would at least try toe Qlogic driver, and the default conf settings first (if you can take a couple of re-boots.) Remember that in general, Fibre Channel cards require TWO reboots, one to discover the card, and another to re-configure to Switched Fabric.
This is really obvious, so I apologize in advance, but have you created disks on the HP to present to the server?

Hi,
I am trying to configure Qlogic ql2342 hba on Solaris2.8 system. I want to run the setup with the native sun hba driver. But i see that the OS is not picking up the device. Though the device is seen during startup, its not see when we query uring the "luxadm qlgc_s_download" utility option.
Can i use the native sun hba drivers with the said Qlogic cards or i can only use ql2342 card with the qlogic drivers.
if anyone could guide me through this configuration setup that will be great.
thanks,
ram.
