Attaching a StorEdge A1000 to a different machine
We currently have a StorEdge A1000 in use, it is attached to a Sun Fire V240. We also have a Netra T 1124 and are trying to attach the A1000 to this machine.
We didn't have any luck so far. RAID Manager 6 finds the controller (c3t0d0). When we select the RAID module we see the LUNs, but when we select a LUN we get:
"An attempt to communicate with a controller has failed. Run the Recovery Guru to check for possible controller failure, and then retry the operation".
The recovery guru doesn't help either, I don't have the exact message, sorry.
On the Sun Fire the A1000 is attached to the onboard SCSI Controller, on the Netra it's a X6541A PCI adapter.
The green "Controller active" LED flashes from time to time, so the communication seems to work, though mounting the LUN does not work.
Can someone please help me on this?
Thanks a lot,
Markus

Hello Markus,
On the Sun Fire the A1000 is attached to the onboard SCSI Controller, on the Netra it's a X6541A PCI adapter.
None of the Sun Fire systems has an integrated HVD SCSI controller. Get another X6541A for the Sun Fire and the A1000 will be detected.
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/A1000/component s.html#SCSI
The A1000 is a HVD SCSI device.
Attaching a HVD device to a SE or even LVD controller may cause damage to both the device and the controller (in this case your system board !).

Hello Michael,
of course you're right, sorry. We have a HVD SCSI controller in both machines. The A1000 works fine on the SunFire.
We attached another (blank) A1000 to the Netra and had no problems with it. We could configure LUNs and mount them, so the Netra is compatible with A1000s in general.
But when we connect the A1000 from the SunFire to the Netra we get the described problem. The RaidManager on the Netra finds the controller and the LUNs (even with "lad" on the console) but any further attempt to access the LUNs ends in a communication error.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
