Connecting a 3500 through a Brocade Switch to Hitachi SAN

I have a E3500 with a x6730A fiber card attached to a Brocade Switch and that switch to a Hitachi SAN.I wanted to find out where I need to start?I can see that E3500 recognizes the HBA card, but unsure as to where to go from here.Do I need to get Veritas FS or can I create volumes through Solstice?Any advice would be appreciated.I have all 3 components configured separatly but have never connected any of them together.

The first thing you should do is run a couple of commands to see what LUNS are available;

# format

# luxadm probe

What version of Solaris are you running? Look for Solaris on Sun Hardware AnswerBook for your release.

And to get a good understanding of what you are going to use the storage for, you'd have to give more details.

I am currently running Solaris 8 and will be using a Hitachi SAN to put an Oracle 9 database on it.Currently the Brocade switch can see our Hitachi SAN, but we are stuck on how to connect E3500 through x6730A to the Brocade.

Did you try a reconfiguration boot? Is the Sun SFS foundation software installed?

I have not tried reconfiguration boot, will do that next...Pardon my ignorance but what is Sun SFS foundation

I have the following installed on my system:

Here is the SFS software link:

<a href="http://www.sun.com/storage/software/storage_mgmt/traffic_manager/" target="_blank"> http://www.sun.com/storage/software/storage_mgmt/traffic_man ager/</a>

At the bottom of the page you'll see "other" menu of links, choose SAN 4.4.

You will need a MySun login account to access the software.

If you can't take the server off line you could try the following;

# devfsadm

Perhaps that will pick up the LUNs from the Hitachi storage you are connected to.

The packages that you have listed are storage management tools.

I did the following and getting results which I think indicates that Imight not have the right drivers installed.Does anybody know what package I need to load in order to load x6730A card?

I just downloaded SFS software however a little confused between the difference in SAN_4.4.8_instaill.it script and SFS_base_packages difference .... which one do I need to install and or both?

Both! Check out the README.

Actually only the install_it is necessary. It includes all the packages and patches needed for a Solaris 8-9 SFS install.Lyle

You're in an unsupported config. You're trying to use the older soc+ cards on a SAN. You need to upgrade to HBAs that work on a SAN such as the ones on this list

http://www.sun.com/storage/san/infrastructure/fc_hba/

If you're running SBUS then the only one you can use is the x6757A card

Those types of cards can be used through the older types of Sun (QLogic) switches as I believe they use SL as the port type. I have a number of E10Ks and other older hosts with those cards and I use them in SAN environments.

The newer switches don't seem to have SL as an option and I have not tried to plug one in to see.

We have just purchased a TagmaStore 1100 and a couple of Cisco 9509 switches which interestingly enough support SOC+ or so the Cisco doco says. Cisco says that the ports are auto-sensing.

Mind you why use 1 Gbs when you can use 2. I am shoving 4 Gbs in the large Sunfires hoping to get better performance.

Does your Brocade switch support SL ports and has anyone actually presented a lun to the 3500 from the HDS? Perhaps LUN masking via WWN or the switch is stopping the 3500 from seeing the LUN.
